About The Position

Position Summary The Day Camp Counselor (Minor) supports the delivery of fun, safe, and meaningful experiences for campers under the direct supervision of adult leadership staff. Working alongside an adult Co-Counselor and Unit Leader, the Counselor assists with daily unit activities, helps foster camper confidence and positive relationships, and contributes to a safe, inclusive camp environment through appropriate supervision, positive role modeling, and active participation in camp life. Counselors support Girl Scout–aligned programs that encourage independence, friendship, and respect for others while following Girl Scouts of Connecticut policies, American Camp Association (ACA) standards, State of Connecticut regulations, and Safety Activity Checkpoints. All responsibilities are performed under the guidance and oversight of adult staff.

Requirements

Must be at least 16 or 17 years of age (per GSOFCT hiring guidelines and state labor regulations).
Interest in working with children and participating in a camp environment.
Ability to follow instructions and work under adult supervision.
Strong communication and teamwork skills appropriate to age and experience.
Positive attitude, reliability, and willingness to learn.
Commitment to the Girl Scout Mission and to creating a safe, inclusive experience for all campers.

Nice To Haves

Certifications such as First Aid/CPR/AED are not required for minor staff but may be supported or encouraged if age-appropriate.

Responsibilities

Camper Supervision & Support Assist in supervising and supporting a designated group of campers under the direction of an adult Counselor or Unit Leader.
Help create a positive, inclusive, and welcoming environment where every camper feels valued and supported.
Support campers in adjusting to camp routines and participating in activities.
Encourage teamwork, kindness, and age-appropriate independence among campers.
Model respectful behavior, cooperation, and appropriate boundaries in all interactions.
Program Support & Participation Assist with unit and small-group activities planned by adult staff.
Support girl-led activities by encouraging camper participation and decision-making.
Help facilitate activities connected to the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE), including courage, confidence, and character development.
Participate in all-camp events, ceremonies, meals, and activities.
Help adapt activities for different skill levels and learning styles with guidance from adult staff.
Health, Safety, and Compliance Follow all camp safety rules, procedures, and instructions from adult leadership staff.
Assist in maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the unit and program areas.
Observe camper behavior and well-being and promptly report concerns to an adult Counselor or Unit Leader.
Participate in safety briefings and emergency drills as directed.
Immediately report any incidents, injuries, or unsafe conditions to adult staff.
Collaboration & Communication Work cooperatively with adult Counselors, Unit Leaders, and fellow staff members.
Communicate camper successes or concerns to supervising staff.
Participate in required staff training, meetings, and check-ins.
Demonstrate flexibility, teamwork, and a positive attitude in support of the camp community.
Other Duties Assist with setup and cleanup of unit areas and activity spaces.
Participate in age-appropriate camp events, ceremonies, and special activities.
Support all-camp duties such as kapers or flag ceremonies, as assigned.
Perform other related, age-appropriate duties as assigned under adult supervision.
