Learn more at https://www.jnj.com/. Program Dates: July 13 – December 18, 2026 Position Summary The Critical Care team is seeking a Co‑Op to support early‑stage research and development efforts. This role focuses on solving data science and analytics challenges. With defined requirements, the candidate will design algorithms for product applications, build machine learning tools, and perform data analysis across multiple initiatives. Core focus areas include: Implementing machine learning techniques for new and existing algorithms Designing and translating algorithms for product integration and internal analysis tools Exploring new applications of data science within the organization Conducting data analysis for internal and external stakeholders

Requirements

  • Current enrollment in a degree program in biomedical engineering, electrical and computer engineering, data science, computer science, AI, statistics, or a related field (master’s or PhD preferred)
  • Strong background in machine learning with experience in deep learning (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch), time‑series modeling, NLP, and LLMs
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (Python preferred) and solid understanding of data structures and algorithms
  • Strong statistical knowledge and analytical skills
  • Self‑motivated with the ability to meet deadlines and execute tasks independently
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Permanently authorized to work in the U.S., must not require sponsorship of an employment visa (e.g., H-1B or green card) at the time of application or in the future. Students currently on CPT, OPT, or STEM OPT usually requires future sponsorship for long term employment and do not meet the requirements for this program unless eligible for an alternative long-term status that does not require company sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Deep understanding of transformer architectures (e.g., GPT, BERT, T5, LLaMA)
  • Experience fine‑tuning and evaluating LLMs for tasks such as NER and QA
  • Familiarity with data science/ML libraries (NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, scikit‑learn, Hugging Face Transformers, LangChain)
  • Experience in signal processing (time‑series analysis, filtering, and domain transformations)
  • Exposure to big data or cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Hadoop, Spark, Hive)
  • Demonstrated interest in the medical device industry
  • Experience using Python‑centric web application frameworks (e.g., Streamlit, Plotly Dash, Django)
  • Experience gathering user feedback and translating it into iterative improvements
  • Familiarity with multi‑stage container builds, container maintenance, and extensions
  • Experience building APIs using FastAPI, including routing, lifecycle management, and async programming
  • PostgreSQL experience, including schema design, permissions management, maintenance, views, triggers, and Python integrations

Responsibilities

  • Assist in designing and training machine learning models for clinical decision support
  • Contribute to process development and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Analyze data and present findings to the broader engineering team
