THE TEAM The Data Engineering Operations team provides 24/7 support for mission-critical data pipelines and infrastructure serving thousands of users across the organization. We monitor and maintain petabyte-scale data processing systems using Airflow, Databricks, AWS services, and ensure 99.9% uptime for business-critical data delivery. Our team follows incident command protocols, uses PagerDuty for alerting, and collaborates closely with Platform Engineering and Data Engineering teams to resolve issues and prevent recurrence. THE ROLE We are seeking a motivated student to join our 24/7 Data Engineering Operations team for a 10-12 week summer internship. This hands-on role offers real-world experience in production support, incident response, and operational reliability for enterprise-scale data infrastructure. The intern will shadow day shift Operations engineers, responding to pipeline failures, infrastructure incidents, and alerts across our data platform. You'll shadow senior Operations Engineers, learning how to monitor systems, respond to alerts, troubleshoot issues, and communicate with other teams during incidents. Intern Schedule: Monday - Friday, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM (Day Shift) THE PROJECT WORK Project 1: Runbook Enhancement with AI Assistance Goal: Improve operational documentation using AI-powered tools The Problem: Our runbooks (troubleshooting guides) are outdated, inconsistent, or missing important steps. When incidents happen, engineers waste time searching for information or asking teammates what to do. Your Mission: Modernize our runbook library using Claude Code and MCP integrations to make them more useful, consistent, and easier to maintain. Project 2: Alert Optimization with Intelligent Analysis Goal: Reduce alert noise and improve signal quality using data analysis and AI The Problem: Our team receives hundreds of PagerDuty alerts per day. Many are false positives, duplicates, or low-priority issues that don't require immediate action. This "alert fatigue" makes it harder to identify and respond to real problems quickly. Your Mission: Analyze alert patterns, identify problematic alerts, and propose data-driven optimizations to improve the signal-to-noise ratio. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: TECHNICAL SKILLS: Data analysis and statistical thinking SQL query writing and optimization Dashboard design and visualization AI-assisted data exploration with Claude Code MCP automation for operations data Stakeholder communication and presentations Metrics-driven decision making Code generation: Write Python scripts, SQL queries, and automation tools Documentation assistance: Draft runbooks, incident reports, and technical docs Troubleshooting support: Use AI to help diagnose errors and suggest fixes Learning accelerator: Quickly understand new technologies and systems Productivity multiplier: Accomplish more with AI-assisted workflows
