About The Position

We are seeking a motivated and technically capable Facilities Specialist to support the daily operations of the State’s primary data center in Miles City. This role focuses on maintaining the reliability, availability, and physical integrity of critical IT infrastructure while coordinating closely with 24/7 operations staff and external vendors. Strong interpersonal and customer service skills are essential, as this position requires clear communication and collaboration with contractors, vendors, and IT staff to ensure smooth operations and timely updates. This position is well-suited for someone with strong technical fundamentals—networking, electrical systems, mechanical systems, and facility operations—who is eager to learn and grow into a specialized data center role. Direct data center experience is valuable, but the ability to learn, adapt, and operate calmly under pressure is more important than time-in-seat experience. You will help develop and maintain standard operating procedures, support infrastructure upgrades, oversee facility maintenance activities, and ensure compliance with inspection and safety requirements. Your work will directly contribute to safeguarding Montana’s digital infrastructure. If you are technically curious, mechanically inclined, and steady in critical situations, we encourage you to apply.

Requirements

  • An Associates degree in telecommunications, information technology, electrical engineering, or related degree
  • Five years of applicable experience in data center, facilities management, or a related field
  • Strong knowledge of data center facilities and technologies.
  • Alternate combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis
  • Knowledge of core information technology concepts, including networking fundamentals, hardware platforms, and data storage systems
  • Basic to intermediate understanding of facility systems such as HVAC, power distribution, UPS systems, and fire suppression
  • Learn and apply new technologies, systems, and procedures in a structured operational environment
  • Understand technical and mechanical systems well enough to identify risks and escalate issues appropriately
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, especially during incidents
  • Remain calm, methodical, and safety-focused during high-pressure or emergency situations
  • Manage vendor and contractor relationships effectively
  • Follow security policies and operational procedures to ensure compliance and minimize risk
  • Technical troubleshooting and problem-solving
  • Time management and task prioritization in a mixed reactive and routine environment
  • Clear written and verbal communication
  • Critical thinking and sound judgment
