About The Position

The Data Architect is responsible for designing and implementing IT solutions in support of the University of Kansas Medical Center’s objectives, goals, and strategy. This individual successfully designs architecture for projects with complex multi-faceted solutions to meet needs for scalability, reliability, and performance and that support business processes, employee and student data management, and reporting needs. The role involves developing, managing, implementing, and optimizing the data architecture that supports both enterprise solutions, and solutions critical to academic unit operations. The Data Architect will work closely with leadership, developers, as well as engagements with third-party vendors, to develop and maintain strategic technology roadmaps, providing expert direction and guidance on technology decisions, while ensuring scalable, reliable, and high-performing solutions.

Requirements

  • Four (4) years of experience in Information Technology, Computer Science, Data Science, or related field. Education may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
  • Six (6) years of relevant experience as a data analyst, engineer, or architect.
  • Experience with database management systems (e.g., SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL) and data integration techniques.
  • Experience with a variety of data formats to access, import, extract, transform, and transfer or load data.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) for business intelligence reporting.
  • Experience with student information systems (SIS) and experience working with academic data management solutions.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining data architecture models, frameworks, and roadmaps.
  • Experience with cloud-based data platforms (e.g., AWS, Microsoft Azure).
  • Experience with data security, governance practices, and compliance requirements such as FERPA, HIPAA, and other relevant standards.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement scalable, reliable, and high-performance data architectures that align with goals and strategies and enterprise IT best practices.
  • Develop database solutions for business processes and reporting, ensuring they meet the needs of various stakeholders.
  • Work with leadership to define and maintain the technology roadmap for assigned focus areas, supporting the long-term strategy of the organization.
  • Design architecture for large-scale projects with complex, multi-faceted solutions, ensuring that solutions align with the organization’s overall business objectives.
  • Build and maintain a robust database infrastructure to manage data solutions across various stages of the enterprise and educational units, including admissions, academic performance, grades, and graduation tracking.
  • Monitor integrations processes to ensure data from multiple systems is integrated for reporting and analytical purposes.
  • Create artifacts such as architectural/business models, roadmaps, frameworks, and fitfor-purpose diagrams to communicate database design and solution strategies.
  • Ensure data integration solutions are optimized for performance, scalability, and business continuity.
  • Work closely with leadership to develop and maintain the strategic technology roadmap for the data architecture, ensuring alignment with future needs and organizational goals.
  • Maintain an understanding of short- and long-term strategies for the organization’s data architecture, consulting on solutions and industry standards to meet business objectives.
  • Prepare and present materials, models, and diagrams to communicate solution designs, rollout strategies, and expected customer impacts.
  • Provide leadership and direction in designing and implementing data solutions that meet the business and technical needs of assigned focus areas.
  • Tailor presentations, reports, and diagrams to a variety of audiences, conveying complex information clearly and concisely.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert, offering “big picture” thought leadership and guidance to both technical teams and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Lead collaborative discussions, facilitating consensus on architectural decisions and business requirements.
  • Enforce data governance and security policies as required by the Office of Information Security to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of institutional data.
  • Implement and maintain data security protocols, access controls, encryption, and auditing mechanisms to protect sensitive data and maintain compliance with relevant regulations (e.g., FERPA, HIPAA) and organizational standards.
  • Promote adherence to architectural standards and guidelines, documenting and maintaining the organization's data architecture standards.
  • Maintain familiarity with various architecture frameworks and languages and apply these frameworks to the data architecture process.
  • Collaborate with business analysts, application developers, software engineers, and other IT teams to ensure the data architecture supports the needs of assigned focus areas.
  • Develop collaborative working relationships to optimize business and technical solution implementation, ensuring effective change management and solution adoption.
  • Produce and maintain technical documentation, including architectural diagrams, data models, and solution design artifacts.
  • Develop and maintain reports and dashboards to support operational and strategic decision-making related to student data, admissions, academic performance, and other school metrics.
