About The Position

JOB PURPOSE: Performing analytical procedures which regularly require a professional level of knowledge to execute, interpret, and/or analyze, especially those results which are abnormal or atypical.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree.
  • One year of supervised clinical experience in an approved clinical laboratory.
  • Certification as a cytotechnologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or the International Association of Cytotechnologists (IAC).
  • Communicates in an effective manner and works effectively with others, possessing tact, discretion, and diplomacy.
  • Possesses theoretical or conceptual understanding of the techniques, methods, and instrumentation utilized in the modern clinical laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Performs technical laboratory functions and related activities.
  • Performs analytical tests and related technical activities with maximum proficiency according to department policies.
  • Utilizes independent judgment in the application of standard laboratory methods, techniques, and established protocol.
  • Applies technical resourcefulness and knowledge gained through study and experience to the most efficient resolution of technical and instrumental problems.
  • Assumes responsibility for own work and work of supervised personnel as relates to atypical results and/or discrepancies and implements corrective action when necessary.
  • Assists, when needed, with the collection of laboratory specimens such as fine needle aspirates, using established laboratory techniques.
  • Maintains a clean and well-organized work area.
  • Accurately performs and documents all pertinent quality control, workload, and instrument maintenance.
  • Utilizes time, equipment, and supplies efficiently.
  • Maintains working knowledge of laboratory information system.
  • Maintains working knowledge of all LIS applications associated with performing job.
  • Assists in troubleshooting problems associated with LIS/HIS instrument interfaces according to laboratory procedure.
  • Fulfills competency requirements according to laboratory policy.
  • Reads annually all laboratory section procedure manuals that are specified in job description (i.e., General Policies and Procedure Manual, Section-Specific Procedure Manual, and Safety Policies and Procedure Manual).
  • Adheres to all safety standards and follows standard operating procedures for sample processing, testing, and verification of test results.
  • Assists in training of new employees.
  • Actively participates in the training of new personnel and the practical instruction of technologist and technical level students.
  • Provides assistance to new employees regarding questions and troubleshooting problems.
  • Monitors supplies to meet needs of department.
  • Monitors the amount of supplies/reagents necessary to maintain consistent workflow.
  • Alerts supervisor or designee when supplies are below specified levels.
  • Completes continuing education events as required for job classification (8 hours).
  • If less than 8 hours are completed, a score of 1 will be given.
  • If 8 hours are completed, a score of 2 will be given.
  • If greater than 1.5 times the number of required hours are completed (12 hours) or if the required hours are completed (8 hours) AND the employee presents an in-service, a score of 3 will be given.
