About The Position

A professional care giver who assumes responsibility and accountability for the overall direction of operating room personnel and activities under the direct supervision of the CV Team Lead and the Operating Room Manager. Administers peri‑operative care for patients undergoing surgery using general anesthesia, sedation, and local anesthesia when appropriate. Assists the surgeon and other professional and technical personnel in carrying out operating room and surgical functions. The patient care requirements include those of infant, child and adolescent patients when these patient populations are served as well as the adult in the cardiac service line. Requirements

  • Graduate of approved school of professional nursing
  • Licensed as an RN in the state of Texas
  • PALS
  • BLS

Nice To Haves

  • Previous OR experience preferred as a scrub nurse or surgical technician.
  • CNOR preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains utmost level of confidentiality at all times.
  • Adheres to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates business practices and personal actions that are ethical and adhere to corporate compliance and integrity guidelines.
  • Communicates in a manner that encourages a positive work environment
  • Demonstrates competency in scrub role
  • Can verbalize needs for frequently done procedures within the service
  • Questions surgeon before procedure for any anticipated variances in particular procedures
  • Assists in surgical procedures by providing wound exposure, homeostasis and handling tissue appropriately to reduce the potential for injury under the direction of the surgeon
  • Is knowledgeable of setup and usage of service equipment
  • Uses sterilizers effectively and can verbalize knowledge of systems
  • Sets up room appropriately for procedure
  • Takes into account size of patient in selection of supplies, equipment
  • Breaks down room after procedure utilizing standard precautions
  • Reports damaged or broken instruments/equipment and removes from usage
  • Transports instruments back to decontamination in closed carts for following cases
  • Deals effectively with rapidly changing conditions, including emergency and stressful situations
  • Administers peri‑operative care for patients undergoing surgery using general anesthesia, sedation, and local anesthesia when appropriate.
  • Individualizes patient plan of care as it relates to the particular procedure that the patient is undergoing as well as to individual patient issues.
  • Is in charge of OR room, ensuring that appropriate personnel, equipment, instruments available to do procedure.
  • Educates both patient and family on perioperative care they will be receiving.
  • Documents in a complete and logical manner ensuring all critical information is included on patient record.
  • Able to operate and troubleshoot perioperative equipment
  • Acts as a patient advocate
  • Assists anesthesiologist when needed.
  • Passes patient information on to appropriate staff and physicians.
  • Charges patients appropriately
  • Participates in process improvement activities of unit
  • Attends mandatory in-services and unit staff meetings.
  • Utilizes standard precautions in patient care.
  • Utilizes self directed learning to improve nursing knowledge and skills
  • Maintains a safe OR environment for patients, staff, and physicians.
