About The Position

Koopman Lumber is looking for a reliable, flexible Customer Service Specialist to support multiple areas of our store, including the sales floor, Lawn & Garden, and Rental & Power Shop. This is a hands-on, “do-all” role ideal for someone who enjoys variety, staying active, and helping customers wherever they’re needed most. The right person understands that great customer service doesn’t live in one department. You’ll float between teams, assist customers, support daily operations, and help keep the store running smoothly—especially during busy weekends.

Requirements

  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Friendly, dependable, and adaptable in a fast-paced environment.
  • Comfortable learning multiple departments and switching tasks throughout the day.
  • Safety-minded with attention to detail.
  • Retail or customer service experience preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Frequent bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, and reaching.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors, including in varying weather conditions.
  • Flexibility to work across departments.
  • Saturday availability is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic familiarity with plants, tools, or equipment is a plus (training provided).
  • Prior experience with plant care, rentals, or tools is helpful but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Greet and assist customers in a friendly, prompt, and professional manner (in person and by phone).
  • Provide product guidance, answer questions, and support purchasing decisions.
  • Assist with inventory questions, pricing, promotions, and general store inquiries.
  • Help customers load materials, tools, or products into vehicles as needed.
  • Assist with live plant care and sales in the Lawn & Garden and greenhouse areas.
  • Inspect plants for quality and identify signs of disease or pests.
  • Provide basic guidance to customers on plant selection and care.
  • Help unload incoming shipments and stock product, following proper procedures.
  • Assist customers with tool and equipment rentals and service requests.
  • Explain rental terms, features, and safety guidelines clearly and professionally.
  • Process rentals, returns, and reservations accurately.
  • Inspect, clean, and organize returned tools and equipment.
  • Support Power Shop Technicians by communicating customer updates and intake details.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas.
  • Communicate effectively with store leadership and team members.
  • Promote teamwork and assist in other departments as needed.
  • Participate in company-sponsored training programs.
