About The Position

The Custodian is responsible for performing a wide range of custodial and maintenance tasks. This role entails ensuring the cleanliness, care, and routine maintenance of program facilities, including parking areas, playgrounds, and storage areas. While the work primarily involves manual labor, certain tasks may require the use of power tools and equipment. Duties are diverse and carried out independently, flowing established school guidelines and routines. The Custodian demonstrates meticulous attention to detail and prioritizes the safety and well-being of children and families while competing assigned tasks.

Requirements

  • Must possess a High School diploma or equivalent with preferred 2-year work experience with custodial duties.
  • Must have current First Aid/CPR care or able to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Must have current food handler's card or able to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
  • Blood Borne Pathogen Certificate or obtain one within 6-months of hire.
  • Must pass a pre-employment background check.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving Permit.
  • Required to pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Knowledge of basic safety rules applicable to operation of electrical and battery powered equipment.
  • Knowledge of standard cleaning practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of safety data sheets (SDS) that are required to be provided with all cleaning substances; ability to read and understand them.
  • Knowledge of basic school policies, rules of conduct, and safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of blood borne Pathogens and Bodily Fluid Removal practices.
  • Ability to learn methods, equipment, and materials ordinarily used in cleaning buildings.
  • Ability to perform custodial tasks associated with care and maintenance of buildings and surrounding premises.
  • Ability to accept constructive criticism relative to performance, quality, and quantity of work, and timely completion of work assignments.
  • Ability to coordinate work assignments and maintain a regular schedule.
  • Ability to work independently, productively and be self-motivated.
  • Ability to understand and implement oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain the physical strength and agility sufficient to perform duties that require considerable use of arms and legs, movement of whole body in climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, and stooping.
  • Ability to communicate with others to convey information effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Performs work in conformance with Head Start Performance Standards.
  • Complies with applicable policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Establishes and maintains a positive, productive, and collaborative relationship with staff, peers, and parents.
  • Communicates and collaborates effectively with other staff.
  • Communicates and collaborates with Health, Nutrition, and Safety Coordinator and program consultants to ensure environments meet all applicable federal regulations.
  • Communicates and collaborates with Bus Driver, Safety Monitor, and Center Staff, to ensure a safe environment for staff, children and families.
  • Always maintains security of buildings; secures doors and windows; and makes repairs as necessary.
  • Maintains outdoor premises in an orderly condition; sweeps or shovels snow from walkways; cuts grass; water lawns; and removes trash and debris on premises.
  • Inspects playground equipment and maintains general upkeep daily to avoid accidents and injury of children.
  • Sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes, and buffs floors, hallways, kitchen, and bathrooms.
  • Vacuums, dusts, cleans, and maintains facilities, equipment and furniture.
  • Collects and removes wastepaper and trash from classrooms, kitchen, halls, offices, and restrooms.
  • Washes walls, windows, mirrors, drinking fountain, and doors.
  • Disinfects toilets, washes bowls, sinks, and restroom areas.
  • Ensures any cleaning supplies and chemicals are not accessible to children.
  • Maintain any applicable SDS on material and chemicals used on promises.
  • Replenishes restroom towels, tissues, and soaps.
  • Unstops/unplugs sinks, toilets, and drains.
  • Receives and maintains inventory of supplies, stores in proper location.
  • Complete any work orders to YN Facilities for work that cannot be completed by staff on site.
  • Orders and pick up appropriate supplies.
  • Delivers items between centers and programs.
  • Work is performed with independence upon learning routine and schedule.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
