About The Position

Performs cleaning and maintenance of buildings, office facilities, and surrounding areas. This is a lead position working at the Sheriff’s Department and may be assigned to work at in a jail or detention center, distinguishing it from other Custodian classifications.

Requirements

  • Four (4) years of experience in commercial, institutional, or industrial custodial work, INCLUDING one (1) year of direct supervision of unskilled or semi-skilled workers or laborers engaged in grounds or facilities maintenance or custodial activities, or an equivalent combination of training and experience as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment.
  • OR: Two (2) years of experience with Pima County as a Custodian II, or in a closely related classification, as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment.
  • Valid driver license is required at time of application.
  • Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment.
  • The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures.
  • Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination.
  • Some positions may require special access authorization for law enforcement or courts computerized databases and communications systems.
  • The County requires pre-employment background checks.
  • Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history.
  • A prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment with the County.
  • Positions in this classification will be required to engage in direct contact with inmates.
  • Department of Labor Regulation CFR Part 1910.1030 requires notification that some positions in this category may have a high risk of exposure to blood borne pathogens.
  • In accordance with OSHA and Pima County guidelines and regulations, Hepatitis B vaccine, tuberculosis screening and respiratory protection training, safety equipment and personal protective clothing will be provided.
  • Prior to appointment, applicants must satisfactorily complete a personal background investigation by law enforcement agencies due to the need for access to corrections facilities and daily contact with corrections inmates.

Responsibilities

  • Engaged in cleaning of buildings, offices facilities and surrounding areas
  • Trains and instructs custodial workers in proper methods and procedures of custodial work and infection control techniques
  • Inspects completed work to determine conformance to accepted standards
  • Supervises and participates in loading, unloading and moving supplies, equipment and furniture
  • Documents and reports safety hazards and potential facility problems
  • Checks inmate areas and trash bags for contraband
  • Confiscates, documents and properly disposes of any contraband found during checks of inmates and makes formal reports to corrections staff of circumstances
  • Transports inmate work crews, using an assigned vehicle, to satellite locations to perform custodial functions
  • Moves furniture and equipment
  • Maintains an inventory of various custodial equipment and supplies
  • Prepares cleaning and disinfectant solutions and assures proper disposal
  • May inspect equipment to determine needs for new parts, repairs, overhaul and replacement
  • Supervising Inmate work crews on job sites
