About The Position

This position is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and general upkeep of Western’s academic facilities through custodial assignments. Working under general supervision, the role oversees custodial operations in one or more buildings and leads a diverse team of cleaning specialists and/or student custodial aides. The position may also perform non‑supervisory custodial duties as needed to support daily operations or departmental needs. In all aspects of this role, the Custodian 3 is expected to incorporate principles of accessibility, diversity, equity, and inclusion into daily work. Requirements

  • At least three years of experience in housekeeping, janitorial, or custodial work.
  • At least two years of leadership experience in a service industry or one year of experience as a custodial, housekeeping, or janitorial lead.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow written instructions and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate information and instructions clearly and effectively, both verbally and one on one or with a diverse team.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and work effectively with a diverse workforce.
  • Experience working in sensitive environments such as offices, classrooms, dormitories, and restrooms.
  • Ability to work independently and complete daily tasks with limited supervision.
  • Ability to physically perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to use a computer or electronic systems to record time worked.
  • Valid driver’s license, or ability to obtain one prior to starting employment, to operate a state owned vehicle.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience performing team based custodial cleaning in a commercial and/or institutional setting.
  • At least two years of experience as a custodial team leader or supervisor.
  • Formal training in leadership or management.
  • Additional experience in water damage or restoration cleaning.

Responsibilities

  • Works with the assigned building team, including opening lock boxes, assigning radios, and following all applicable Facility Maintenance access and security procedures.
  • Assists Custodian Supervisors with coordinating the delivery of cleaning services to building occupants and clients by implementing team schedules based on daily staffing levels.
  • Trains new employees in proper standardized cleaning techniques.
  • Ensures all employees are properly following established standard operating procedures.
  • Trains team members to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Monitors assigned staff to ensure all safety practices are consistently followed.
  • Assists Custodian 4 and 5 with maintaining inventories of equipment, cleaning supplies, and consumable supplies.
  • Assists Custodian 4 and 5 with the maintenance of employee records.
  • Supports ACS departmental and supervisory goals by promoting morale, teamwork, and cooperation within work teams.
  • Oversees the locking and unlocking of buildings and interior rooms as required.
  • Interacts with building occupants and clients to ensure service needs and Facilities Maintenance objectives are met.
  • Performs daily key inventories and reports any discrepancies.
  • Assists with providing input for project work to support proper planning and completion of assigned building projects.
  • Restocks restroom supplies and refills dispensers as needed.
  • Empties trash; cleans and sanitizes fixtures, mirrors, partitions, and doors.
  • Sweeps and mops floors.
  • Inspects fixtures and reports damage or burned‑out light bulbs.
  • Empties trash and replaces liners.
  • Wipes high‑touch areas such as doorknobs and light switches.
  • Dusts horizontal and vertical surfaces.
  • Removes small debris from floors and spot clean door glass.
  • Places trash receptacles in designated locations for pickup.
  • In classrooms, cleans tables, tablet armchairs, boards, erasers, and restocks chalk as needed.
  • Performs interim floor and carpet care between scheduled major cleanings.
  • Spot cleans carpets and transports trash to dumpsters.
  • Cleans and maintains stairs, stairwells, floors, and door glass.
  • Inspects areas before vacuuming.
  • Vacuums traffic areas and spot vacuums other areas according to schedule.
  • Removes debris from furniture, returns furniture to proper placement, turn off lights, and secures areas.
  • Performs project cleaning of seating areas, walk‑off mats, lockers, and benches.
  • Collects recyclable materials as assigned.
  • Assists with furniture setup and removal for special events.
  • Assists Custodian 4 or 5 with project cleaning oversight.
  • Under supervision, performs floor maintenance, restoration, and assigned deep cleaning.
  • Cleans and restocks custodial closets.
  • Operates custodial equipment and performs routine operator‑level maintenance.
  • Moves furniture, supplies, and tools as needed.
  • Reports maintenance and repair needs.
  • Cleans interior and accessible exterior windows, light covers, and diffusers.
  • Performs exterior cleaning, including debris removal, sweeping sidewalks or stairs, and limited snow removal at primary building entrances.
