About The Position

Under the direction of the Lead Custodian, this position performs a variety of cleaning tasks in assigned offices, classrooms, restrooms, and other campus buildings. The role also assists with maintenance activities and performs other related duties as assigned. All responsibilities are expected to be carried out in a positive and receptive manner that supports and advances the mission and vision of the New Mexico School for the Deaf. It is anticipated and expected that all functions of this position will be performed in a positive and respectful manner, with a strong focus on advancing the mission and vision of New Mexico School for the Deaf. The duties and competencies listed are comprehensive yet not all inclusive of this position.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Custodian 1: This is an entry-level position; however, one (1) year of experience in custodial or housekeeping services is preferred.
  • Custodian 2: This is a skilled-level position . Two (2) or more years of experience in custodial or housekeeping services are preferred.
  • Certification or specialization in floor maintenance care, or other related specialized housekeeping training is required.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, and the general public.
  • Proficiency in or willingness to learn American Sign Language required.
  • Writes clearly and informatively; varies writing style to meet needs.
  • Must be organized and detail-oriented.
  • collects and aggregates data for program maintenance and improvement.
  • Seeks feedback to improve performance; pursues training and development opportunities; strives to continuously build knowledge and skills.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans assigned school facilities, keeping them safe, and free of obstructions.
  • Washes windows, door panels, and sills.
  • Keep the buildings neat, clean, and safe for the purpose of conducting school activities.
  • Replace light bulbs.
  • Ensure all doors, windows, and other areas of the building(s) are in good condition and can be secured at the end of the day.
  • Vacuum and sweep thoroughly all assigned rooms, corridors, halls, and offices at least once each day.
  • Floors should be stripped and waxed as needed throughout the school year.
  • Mop restroom floors, clean and disinfect fixtures, clean mirrors and stalls, check paper and hand soap daily
  • Observe and make suggestions for repairs, alterations, changes, and equipment as needed in the school.
  • Report safety, sanitary, and fire hazards.
  • Empties wastebaskets, and transports trash and waste to disposal area.
  • Replenishes bathroom supplies.
  • Respond to emergency cleanups such as spills; maintain records of observed maintenance, repair needs and safety issues.
  • Pick up and rakes paper, trash and debris around school grounds and in buildings; sweep and clean walkways and entrances; dispose of trash according to established procedures; wash out trash cans and follow established sanitation procedures and standards.
  • Works weekends or afterhours as required.
  • Assists in campus snow removal when needed.
  • Work outside in the sun, rain, snow and cold when needed.
