About The Position

The Culture and Residential Life Director for the YOLA National Festival is a part-time, seasonal position from July 25th – August 11th, 2026, in Los Angeles, CA with limited remote work beginning early February (approx. 8-10 hours/week). The Culture and Residential Life Director will work in conjunction with the Senior Artistic Manager and LA Phil staff to ensure a highly organized, safe and exciting residential life experience for YNF. This position is responsible for managing the Residential Life program including supervising Residential Life Managers and Residential Counselors, creating staff schedules, developing and leading residential programming for up to 200 young people, cultivating a positive “off-stage” community, and implementing safety and security measures that ensure consistent supervision and support. All lodging and meals will be provided by the LA Phil. Generous stipends will be provided for flights and transportation The Culture and Residential Life Director must be fully available from July 25th – August 11th, 2026. This position will include evening and weekend responsibilities. This is a live-on campus position at a Los Angeles based college campus. Live-on campus dates are July 31st – August 11th, 2026. The Culture and Residential Life Director will also complete remote work including development and conducting training sessions and meetings leading up to the festival with support from the Residential Life Managers and Senior Artistic Manager.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage all aspects of a residential life program serving young people ages 12–18+, including community culture, supervision, safety, and daily operations.
  • Proven ability to supervise and support a multi-level staff team, including scheduling, training, communication, and performance oversight.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to coordinate across departments, and serve as a primary point of contact for staff, families, and institutional partners.
  • Experience designing and implementing inclusive community-building and residential programming based in youth supervision, supports well-being, and a positive “off-stage” experience for large groups of participants.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage logistics and systems related to residential operations, including transportation coordination, scheduling, transitions between residential and artistic programming, and emergency response implementation.
  • Experience collaborating with medical and wellness staff to support participant health needs, implement safety protocols, and respond effectively to emergencies.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound decisions in fast-paced, high-responsibility environments.
  • Ability to work independently and remotely while managing multiple priorities with attention to detail and accountability.
  • Prior administrative and project management experience, including documentation, reporting, and maintaining accurate records related to staffing, scheduling, and program operations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and remote collaboration tools (Slack, Google Workspace, Zoom, etc.).
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse communities; experience working with high school–aged students from diverse backgrounds preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for managing Residential Life Managers and Resident Counselors
  • Supervise the care of over up to 200 participants during designated residential life programming
  • Design and implement Residential Life Staff Trainings
  • Design residential life experience in conjunction with LA Phil staff to help achieve programmatic goals including safety and security protocols, highly organized daily schedules, and exciting student life experiences that align with protocols of YOLA and the LA Phil.
  • Oversee residential life systems implementation by the Residential Life Managers
  • Manage Resident Counselor Staff
  • Participate in leadership meetings with LA Phil staff in which programmatic plans, and updates are communicated on a regular basis
  • Support in the hiring of Residential Life Managers and Resident Counselor candidates (participating in interviews and supporting onboarding as possible)
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for culture and residential life partnerships and campus staff related to housing
  • Oversee Residential Life Program for participants
  • Establish and manage necessary supplies.
  • Collaborate with campus staff and leadership to ensure smooth check-in and check-out processes, transportation coordination, facility rentals, and day-to-day dorm management.
  • Create rooming assignments and dorm operating systems for all participants
  • Coordinate mealtime supervision and processes, including various offsite or catered meals as needed
  • Create and execute consequence protocols/actions for participants as necessary
  • Collaborate with Travel Coordinators to plan and oversee local transportation logistics for off-site travel, including arrivals and departures at LAX and transportation to venues such as the Hollywood Bowl and Walt Disney Concert Hall, as well as additional trips as needed, ensuring safe and well-coordinated participant movement.
  • Collaborate with the on-site Nurse to implement emergency protocols, coordinate medication distribution, and support participant medical needs.
  • Work with the YOLA National Coordinator to ensure safe, well-coordinated transitions of participants and vital information between residential life and artistic programming.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for parents and guardians, responding to questions, coordinating appropriate care and coverage, and ensuring participant safety and well-being.

  • Serve as an active, visible leader within the YOLA National team and participate fully in all YOLA National Festival events, modeling professionalism and care for staff and participants.
  • Attend and lead meetings related to residential life, culture, safety, and operations; communicate conflicts proactively and ensure preparation, follow-up, and continuity when attendance is not possible.
  • Manage responsibilities and deliverables within established timelines, ensuring residential life systems, staffing, and programming are executed effectively and consistently.
  • Effectively balance multiple, shifting priorities, responding quickly and thoughtfully to emerging needs, challenges, and changes in schedule or operations.
  • Work independently and proactively, identifying operational needs, assessing risks, and implementing solutions that support participant well-being and program success.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills with a high attention to detail when working with staff, participants, and families.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and exercise of sound judgment and discretion when handling sensitive information, personnel matters, and participant concerns.
  • Uphold the highest standards of professionalism and serve as a representative of the YOLA National program, the Festival, and the LA Phil at all times.
  • Engage effectively with a wide range of YOLA community stakeholders, including administrators, partners, teaching artists, alumni, parents/guardians, and young musicians.
