About The Position

The Nurse Manager facilitates the realization of the organization's mission, strategic plan, and values at the point of care. Plans for, leads, coordinates and facilitates the provision of quality care and service for a defined population of patients and facilitates the procurement of appropriate supplies/equipment and provides for adequate numbers and mix of staff to deliver nursing care. The Nurse Manager demonstrates excellence in problem solving, leadership, communication, fiscal responsibility and teamwork. The Nurse Manager provides leadership, consultation and collaboration in a dynamic, multidisciplinary teaching environment. She/He collaborates with administrators and other members of the health care team to design, evaluate and improve patient care systems and processes. She/he supports nursing professional development, Magnet, and Shared Governance through participation in, and mentoring of colleagues, on councils and the Clinical Ladder program.

Requirements

  • Effective Communication- Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques, ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors. Uses the language of partnership with patients and families, engaging them in their health and health care.
  • Patient-and Family-Centered Practice- Knowledge of how to convey respect and collaborate with each patient, family and/or designated care partner in care.
  • Cultural Awareness- Knowledge of people with diverse backgrounds and the ability to convey respect and connect effectively.
  • Care Coordination Knowledge of the medical, social, economic, and other services provided by other departments or facilities, and the ability to integrate these multidisciplinary treatments for optimal patient care.
  • Patient Safety Knowledge of the risks faced by patients in a healthcare environment, and the ability to take steps to reduce these risks.
  • Medication Administration and Prescription Knowledge of various medications used to treat patients, ability to apply this knowledge to the administration of medications and to the prescription of drugs for continuing treatment outside of the hospital.
  • Discharge Planning Knowledge of the patient's post-discharge needs and the ability to consider these needs in planning for discharge and arranging for follow-up care.
  • Assessment and Diagnosis Knowledge of various tools and techniques for patient assessment and nursing diagnosis or clinical judgement, ability to explore and analyze reasons behind symptoms and generate resolutions according to available drugs, facilities and techniques.
  • Health Information Documentation Knowledge of the relevance of health information and appropriate documentation methods, ability to record medical histories, symptoms, vital signs, medications, diagnoses, treatment plans, procedures, tests, and medical results in written or electronic form

Responsibilities

  • Plans, Directs and Coordinates nursing care for a specific patient care area in collaboration with the Nursing Director and other appropriate nursing leaders and professional develop staff.
  • Recruits, interviews and selects staff for the patient care unit.
  • Provides leadership and direction in implementation of strategic goals and objectives.
  • Develops, implements and evaluates unit policies, procedures and goals, which are consistent with department and organizational goals.
  • Completes regular performance evaluations for each staff member and serves as a clinical resource regarding policies and procedures, patient standards, performance improvement, and risk management issues.
  • Conducts evaluations for new staff prior to completion of probationary period with input from appropriate nursing staff.
  • Demonstrates effective conflict resolution skills.
  • Counsels employees and utilizes the disciplinary process as appropriate.
  • Develops, implements and evaluates staffing plan to meet the patient and family care needs.
  • Develops implements and evaluates areas of improvement to increase quality of patient and family care in collaboration with the nurse director or quality improvement manager.
  • Identifies issues related to quality of patient care, and develops, implements and evaluates unit improvement program/projects within a shared governance model.
  • Accountable and responsible for continuous quality and regulatory management directives including JCAHO, OSHA, etc.
  • Designs, implements and evaluates the unit patient satisfaction plan.
  • Acts as a resource and serves as a clinical role model to members of the health care team.
  • Assists professional development staff with the creation and implementation of educational programs.
  • Recommends, participates in the development of and implements policies and procedures.
  • Provides leadership and direction in accordance with organizational and departmental goals and objectives.
  • Seeks opportunities for nursing research.
  • Collaborates with professional development staff to set minimum competencies and oversees ongoing professional development of staff
  • Manages available resources insuring that the operation of the patient care area occurs within the limitations of the budget
  • Is knowledgeable about costs and revenue opportunities.
  • Assists in the development of cost saving activities.
  • Collaborate with Director/ACNO budget forecasting.
  • Educate healthcare team members on cost efficient care and appropriate staffing, and on the efficient use of material resources.
  • Monitors staff schedules to ensure adequate staffing to meet patient care needs and maintain quality patient care.
  • Authorize overtime or scheduling changes to fill shifts as necessary.
  • Completes payroll in collaboration with assistant nurse manager or patient care coordinator.
  • Provides volumes & adjustments to reflect variances in staffing needs within Smart Square.
