About The Position

Our Critical Care Advanced Practice Professionals (APPs) are located across 3 of our Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Campuses, in Winston-Salem, Lexington, and High Point, and provide expert care in a variety of intensive care settings. Lexington is a small community hospital with a 16-bed ICU and High Point, another community hospital, has a 24-bed ICU. Our Winston-Salem campus offers specialized critical care across multiple subspecialties, including Neuro ICU, Medical ICU, Medical Oncology ICU, and Cardiothoracic ICU. APPs will be considered for positions at all campuses and credentialed at all Critical Care locations Responsibilities include physical assessment and management of a broad range of critical illnesses; performing and assisting with common critical care procedures to include insertion of vascular catheters for central venous access, dialysis, arterial line placement and monitoring, endotracheal intubation. Clinical duties encompass comprehensive care of the critically ill patient starting with initial resuscitation and management, continuing with the coordination of clinical care between intensivist teams and multiple consulting teams, counseling patients and their families on the details of their illness, care and decision making process, concluding with patients/family preparation for discharge from the ICU. As a valued member of our healthcare team, the PA/ACNP will play a key role in team-focused patient care, conducting thorough examinations and evaluations in medical/surgical settings.

Requirements

  • Physician Assistant (PA) Requirements:
  • Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant Program; Master's Degree preferred
  • Current North Carolina Medical Board Medical License, Certified by NCCPA
  • Minimum of one year of experience in a critical care or urgent/ emergent care environment
  • Current Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA)
  • Current BLS and ACLS
  • Nurse Practitioner (NP) Requirements:
  • Graduation from accredited Nurse Practitioner Master's Program, Master’s degree or higher required
  • Current North Carolina Board of Nursing Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner license
  • Board certified as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner by AANP or ANCC
  • Minimum of one year of experience in a critical care or urgent/ emergent care environment
  • Current Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA)
  • Current BLS and ACLS

Responsibilities

  • Using medical decision-making skills to determine appropriate patient care plan.
  • Collaborate with critical care physicians in Specialty Intensive Care Units.
  • Perform physical assessments and manage a broad range of critical illnesses.
  • Order and interpret laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures; explain the necessity, preparation, nature, and anticipated effects of scheduled diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to the patient.
  • Conduct common critical care procedures: Insertion of central venous catheters Dialysis Arterial line placement and monitoring Endotracheal intubation Procedural skills per department or practice guidelines.
  • Provide comprehensive care of critically ill patients, including: Initial resuscitation and management Coordination of clinical care between intensivist and consulting teams Counseling patients and families on illness details, care, and decision-making processes Preparing patients and families for discharge from the ICU
  • Collaborate with the medical team when needed for effective team-based care.

  • The clinician functions under the regulatory mandate from their respective licensing organization (North Carolina Medical Board or North Carolina Board of Nursing) with departmental specific credentialing from the institution.
