About The Position

The Crisis Specialist provides mental health counseling and support to non-hospitalized individuals (18 and older) experiencing a severe disruption in thought, mood, or behavior. The primary role of the Crisis Specialist is to help the individual with the psychological response to a specific situation and minimize long-term mental and emotional damage; triage to determine the level of crisis, assess and evaluate behavior, and make a clinically appropriate recommendation for the next steps. Requirements

  • A Masters degree in human services, or related field, from an accredited college or university with at least one year of crisis experience and at least one year of clinical experience providing assessment and diagnosis of mental illness; history working with individuals who have substance use dependency preferred.
  • Candidate must demonstrate competence in assertive/aggression and management of conflict resolution
  • Must possess a willingness to see clients in their homes and within the community
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Must have current, valid driver's license in the state of residence, three (3) years driving experience in the United States, and acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and analyze mental health histories, medical records, and legal documents.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Ability to write in a manner that conforms to prescribed style and format.
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should know Internet software to access company e-mail, training and evaluation tools, and a working knowledge of spreadsheet and word processing software. Demonstrated knowledge in the use of electronic health records.
  • CPR certification.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment with established procedures.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Requires strong organizational skills and the ability to perform multiple tasks, set priorities, and meet expectations

Responsibilities

  • Provide immediate access to crisis support through phone counseling and in-person crisis intervention
  • Effectively triage to determine the level of crisis and necessary crisis response services; understanding of the progression of the emotional states following trauma; assessment of the crisis state (independent of individuals response state)
  • Assess and evaluate client behavior; utilization of evidence-based practices, tools, and instruments Provide evidence-based counseling (de-escalation, grief, substance use recovery, short-term solution-focused)
  • Knowledge of which social services are available to different individuals and ability to coordinate services with multiple governments, aid, recovery support, hospital, or social service organizations
  • Maintaining a network of other specialists to whom you can refer the patient for ongoing care Ability to work in a variety of high-risk situations and guide individuals in a calm, professional manner toward making healthier choices without rendering judgment
  • Support securing appropriate services for individuals in crisis, including referrals to voluntary inpatient settings and applications for involuntary emergency examination and treatment under §302 of the Mental Health Procedures Act of 1976.
  • Provide linkages to community supports, supportive counseling, and substance abuse services and always reflecting the possibility of recovery
  • Provide all appropriate documentation set forth by supervisor including but not limited to progress notes, summary and assessment, administrative intake, follow-up, and inter-agency communication
  • Participate in assertive outreach to individuals identified to be a high risk of necessitating crisis services; handle multiple cases at once Interface with families, loved ones, and other supports of persons
  • Maintain communication with physician, psychiatrist, pharmacist, and other appropriate ancillary service providers
  • Attend scheduled staff team meetings and appropriate in-service training as directed by the supervisor
