About The Position

The Crew Leader will work in collaboration with Forest Service staff to lead a small team of ACE Members in maintaining and improving recreation facilities, trails, and infrastructure throughout the Santa Catalina and Nogales and Rangers districts. The Crew Leader is responsible for ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality work performance, as well as fostering a positive crew culture focused on teamwork, learning, and environmental stewardship. This position combines hands-on fieldwork with crew supervision and project coordination. Candidates with carpentry or construction skills and prior leadership experience are strongly encouraged to apply.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated leadership experience (crew supervision, project coordination, or equivalent role)
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Working knowledge of recreation or forestry practices applicable to public lands
  • Basic carpentry or construction skills (e.g., tool use, repair, or installation work)
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Valid driver's license with an insurable driving record (documentation required)
  • Reliable personal transportation to reach duty station
  • High level of physical fitness and willingness to camp during field assignments
  • Ability to pass a federal background check

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and support a crew of 2 ACE Members performing recreation maintenance projects.
  • Coordinate daily work plans, delegate tasks, and ensure safety protocols are followed at all times.
  • Communicate effectively with Forest Service partners to align project goals, priorities, and timelines.
  • Conduct daily tailgate safety meetings and maintain clear documentation of crew activities.
  • Ensure recreation sites are operated and maintained regularly to meet Forest Service standards for public service.
  • Clean and maintain Forest-operated campgrounds, day-use areas, and trailheads.
  • Construct, repair, and install recreation infrastructure, including bear boxes, picnic tables, kiosks, steps, signs, and fire rings-requiring basic carpentry and hand tool skills.
  • Report on site conditions, use levels, and maintenance needs to Forest Service staff.
  • Conduct Trail maintenance in the National Forest
  • Interact professionally with visitors and concessionaires, providing information about recreation opportunities, safety, and regulations.
  • Support campground hosts and act as liaison between the Forest Service and concessionaire-operated sites.
  • Promote Leave No Trace ethics and assist with public education on resource management practices.
  • Conduct safety hazard analyses of public recreation sites and recommend corrective actions.
  • Patrol both front country and dispersed recreation areas to ensure compliance with regulations and Wilderness Management Plans.
  • Install and maintain informational and regulatory signage throughout recreation areas.
  • Ensure crew members use proper PPE (boots, gloves, hard hats, etc.) and follow all safety standards.
  • Collect, compile, and summarize field data for recreation use reporting.
  • Maintain accurate logs of daily activities, maintenance actions, and material use.
