About The Position

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is one of the largest, most complex agencies in the state, and has approximately 17,000 employees. It is responsible for ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of all North Carolinians, providing human service needs for special populations including individuals who are deaf, blind, developmentally disabled, and mentally ill, and helping poor North Carolinians achieve economic independence. The primary purpose of this position is to evaluate residents through comprehensive, individualized, and discipline-specific assessments. The Creative/Expressive Arts Therapist will develop and implement therapeutic programs, techniques, and interventions that utilize the four core expressive modalities—movement, drama, visual arts, and music—to enhance residents' overall quality of life. This role involves facilitating both individual and group therapy sessions tailored to meet the emotional, cognitive, and psychosocial needs of residents. The therapist will collaborate with the interdisciplinary care team, presenting assessment findings and progress reports to support the development and execution of effective care plans. About Black Mountain Neuro-Medical Treatment Center: Black Mountain Neuro-Medical Treatment Center is one of three state operated facilities serving adults with chronic and complex medical conditions that co-exist with neurodevelopmental or neurocognitive disorders often related to a diagnosis of severe and persistent mental illness or intellectual disability. The health and physical status of these residents require 24-hour supervision, daily nursing care, and assistance with activities of daily living. Our Mission Statement: We are a specialized long-term care facility focusing on maintaining quality of life and dignity for adults with neurocognitive or neurodevelopmental disorders with coexisting complex medical and behavioral needs whose level of support extends beyond that which can be provided in family or community living settings. We are committed to providing individualized compassionate care delivered by highly skilled staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in music therapy which includes a six-month internship from an appropriately accredited institution; or Bachelor’s degree in music or music education with an equivalency in music therapy which includes a six-month internship from an appropriately accredited institution; or Bachelor’s degree in one of the creative/expressive arts areas (art, dance, drama, music) from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in all phases of therapeutic programming; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Administering the class: if the creative/expressive arts degree program has a therapeutic equivalency or emphasis, the experience requirements will be waived.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the therapeutic creative/expressive arts principles, techniques and methods.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, planning, coordinating, implementing and evaluating creative/expressive arts programs.
  • This position is designated as mandatory and must report or stayover during adverse weather events.
