About The Position

The Courthouse Police Sergeant is a commissioned law enforcement position. The Police Sergeant provides and overseas Policing and Safety Services for the 18th Judicial District Courthouses, Sedgwick County physical properties, employees, and the citizens. Police Sergeants are front-line level supervisors who perform the same duties of a Courthouse Police Officer. In addition, creates schedules for/and guides, directs, and mentors their subordinates. The Courthouse Police Sergeant works under the direction of the Police Lieutenant.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or Equivalent.
• Four years of experience in Law Enforcement.
• One year of experience in Business or Public Administration.
• Up to two years of experience may be substituted with education that provides applicable knowledge and skills.
• Currently certified Law Enforcement Officer under KSCPOST, or must certify within 120 days.
• Must be a United States Citizen.
• Must be 21 years or older.
• Candidate can have no record of criminal conviction, diversion, or expungement of any felony or crime of dishonesty, or the equivalent under the uniform code of military justice.
• Per Sedgwick County Policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid US driver’s license without restrictions and current automobile insurance.

Nice To Haves

• Ten years of law enforcement experience.
• Five years of law enforcement supervisor experience.
• Customer Service skills and experience.
• Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justice or related field.

Responsibilities

• Provide front-line supervision and oversee the daily operations of commissioned and non-commissioned police officers.
• Oversee work performed by commissioned and non-commissioned officers.
• Ensure officers are properly conducting security screening of personal property, x-raying bags, brief cases, purses, and coats.
• Monitor calls for service and ensures officers are available to assist with routine calls for service.
• Direct the public to the appropriate offices.
• Respond to calls for assistance from commissioned and non- commissioned police officers.
• Ensure subordinate officers check employee badges, LEO Credentials, and Fast Passes.
• Maintain the daily/compound/and property logs.
• Evaluate employee performance, discuss and review the results with employees, handle grievances, and give disciplinary action as necessary.
• Oversee and ensure commissioned and non-commissioned officers respond to Roving Patrols in and around the Courthouses and other Sedgwick County complexes.
• Schedule commissioned and non-commissioned police officers to appropriate screening positions and to other duties as deemed necessary.
• Ensure proper paperwork is being completed by commissioned and non-commissioned officers.
• Schedule officers to perform thorough and complete interior and exterior patrols of assigned county complexes/properties.
• Supervise and respond to calls for assistance, including fire alarms, medical calls, criminal activity, and disturbances.
• Conduct criminal investigations on courthouse police cases, detains suspect(s), and conduct arrests as necessary.
• Provide Policing and Safety Services, by scheduling a uniformed presence in the 18th Judicial District Court/ Court Dockets, to deter disruptions, confrontations and illegal activities from occurring.
• Schedule commissioned and non-commissioned officers to provide safety and security for the protection of a Judge, Jury, courtroom occupants, or other court hearings/duties as requested.
• Schedule and Supervises Officers to the detention and arrest of individuals on commitment orders, warrants, or in-person arrest upon finding probable cause.
• Perform the duties of a Courthouse Police Officer.
• Ensure enforcement of District Court Rules.
