About The Position

The City of Lawrence Municipal Court handles violations of city ordinances, including traffic and parking offenses within city limits. A full-time Judge, appointed by the City Manager, presides over all court proceedings and oversees the adjudication of cases in accordance with applicable statutes and ordinances. Non-judicial court operations fall under the direction of the City Attorney and the supervision of the Court Manager. The court's support staff includes a Senior Court Clerk and five Court Clerks. The Court Clerk II performs a variety of administrative, financial, and clerical duties in both courtroom and office environments. Key responsibilities include preparing court dockets, accurately entering plea, fine, and sentencing information, and reporting case dispositions to the State of Kansas in a "Paper on Demand" environment. Additional duties include providing exceptional customer service in person and by phone, processing payments accurately, and scanning documents into the court and case management systems. This position will receive comprehensive training in all areas of court operations. The successful candidate must demonstrate accuracy in handling money, maintain strict confidentiality regarding court records, and manage multiple tasks in a setting with frequent interruptions.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by at least two years of responsible clerical, financial, or administrative experience.
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Strong customer service skills, dependability, and experience working with the public.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work accurately in a fast-paced environment with frequent distractions.
  • Must successfully pass a background check, post-offer physical, and drug screen.

Nice To Haves

  • Fluency in Spanish is preferred.
  • Experience with court case management systems, document scanning systems, and legal terminology is highly preferred.
