About The Position

The Resident Camp Counselor (Counselor) is responsible for acting as the primary caregiver for their assigned unit campers, including ensuring a safe and healthy environment is maintained, supervising camper behavior, identifying and managing hazards, and promoting mission and values of Beyond, by example. The Counselor is responsible for planning and leading the session(s) activities, with input from campers, and ensuring scheduled content occurs The counselor will assist other staff in facilitating activities at program areas such as, but not limited to, swimming and boating.

Requirements

  • Be at least 23 years of age.
  • Believe in the Beyond mission.
  • Desire to work with LGBTQ+ youth in the outdoors and to immerse oneself in the outdoor environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills including the ability to manage multiple projects and details simultaneously.
  • Possess good character, integrity, patience, sense of humor, enthusiasm, a high level of flexibility, and willingness to be a part of the camp community.
  • Ability to work productively in a fast paced, stressful environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior summer day or resident camp experience preferred.
  • CPR/First Aid training, or willingness to obtain

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers in their unit, during all unit times, which includes meals, all-camp activities, activities at program areas, and transition times.
  • Apply basic principles of youth development, connect with the campers, and work with campers to create positive and meaningful relationships utilizing communication, respect and empowerment.
  • Act as a positive role model for campers.
  • Take an active role in the camp community by participating enthusiastically in all aspects of camp.
  • Strive to provide a fun, exciting, and inviting atmosphere for all campers.
  • Practice confidentiality and utmost discretion with knowledge of camper medical history.
  • Honor and respect camper and staff name and pronouns(s) as important contributing factors to overall positive mental well-being.
  • Maintain campers’ overall health and safety while at camp, alerting the Beyond Director and Health Supervisor and/or Wellness Supervisor of any issues, and ensuring each campers’ personal health and hygiene needs are met.
  • Follow all safety procedures and camp rules, including New York Department of Health, Girl Scout Safety Activity Checkpoints, and American Camp Association Standards.
  • Interact with campers’ parents, utilizing strong customer service skills and maintaining good rapport.
  • Work cooperatively with fellow staff members to ensure a positive camp environment
  • Assist with check-in and check-out procedures.
  • Ensure cabins and tents, bathrooms, dining hall, chill zone, quiet room, and common program areas are clean and ready for the next camp session.
  • Assist with weekly camp clean up, including sweeping, mopping, sanitizing, trash pick- up, etc.
  • Model self-care among campers and staff. This includes taking all (mandatory) breaks, adequate hydration, attaining a reasonable amount of sleep, balanced nutrition, and caring for one’s own emotional wellness.
  • Lead activities such as but not limited to archery, arts & crafts, field games, and hike
  • Assist program staff as needed (i.e.: Campfires, all-camp activities, waterfront)
  • Adhere to all COVID-19 protocols required by NYS Department of Health and GSNYPENN.
