About The Position

Woodruff Arts Center employees play an integral role in creating and supporting great art and education initiatives at the nation’s third largest arts center. Reports to: Director, Public Engagement FLSA: United States of America (Non-Exempt) Employment Status: Temporary/Part time Learning and Civic Engagement The High Museum of Art’s Learning and Civic Engagement Department connects people with art and ideas to inspire better civic life. We activate the Museum’s collections and exhibitions with inclusive learning opportunities, and we collaborate to share creative practices alongside art and artists. Our work cultivates growth through inquiry and strengthens people’s connections with themselves, one another, and the wider world. Summer Camp The High Museum Summer Art Camp is a hands-on art day camp for children in rising kindergarten through rising eighth grade. Eight different week-long topics are available during the summer months providing age-appropriate art exploration and creation. Each week, more than 80 campers participate, with up to 15 dedicated camp staff implementing and supporting the program. This Role The Camp Counselor assists the Camp Teaching Artist with lesson implementation and is a positive frontline museum education presence. The Camp Counselor is friendly, loves kids, and welcomes both children and their adult caregivers. The Counselor is responsible for prepping supplies, set-up/clean-up of classrooms, ensuring carpool is successful, and creating an engaging classroom environment. The Counselor also ensures children’s safety at all times including breaks, lunch, and recess. The Counselor supports the work of the Learning and Civic Engagement department with regard to camp programs as described below. Hourly Rate: $13 per/hr

Requirements

  • Ability to pass a background check.
  • Minimum – high school diploma or GED.
  • Experience working with children is required.

Responsibilities

  • Actively assists camp staff and participates in all aspects of the campers’ days.
  • Responsible for assisting assigned Camp Teaching Artist with implementation of approved camp lesson plans.
  • Helps establish a positive museum experience for children and their families through professional and friendly interactions.
  • Responsible for a group of up to 25 children on a daily basis, including in the workshops, galleries, and on the Woodruff campus.
  • Sets a good example for campers in all areas, including cleanliness, punctuality, clean-up, rules, and sportsmanship.
  • Helps to ensure children’s safety, manages children’s behavior, and acts as a role model and mentor.
  • Responsible for setting up classroom for each week’s/day’s activities.
  • Responsible for assisting with post-class cleanup.
  • Responsible for monitoring, unpacking, and preparation of supplies for summer camp classrooms/workshops.
  • Communicates with Camp Leader and Camp Assistant Leader all relevant concerns, issues, updates, and/or challenges.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Greets children and caregivers at carpool drop-off and pick-up.
  • Ensures all students enter the building and arrive at the correct classroom safely.
  • Responsible for check-in and check-out and attendance of classroom each day.
