For the 2024-2025 academic year, we enrolled over 45,000 students in which 68% identify as Latinx, 11% as Asian/Pacific Islander, 4% as Black/African American, 14% as White, 1% as American Indian/Alaska Native, and 2% as multiracial. The successful candidate will join a department dedicated to the use of a curriculum responsive to the students it serves. Reporting to the Dean of Student Services, Counseling at Fresno City College; it will cover a full range of counseling responsibilities in the Health Sciences division including academic, career and personal counseling with individuals and groups in addition to teaching discipline specific courses. Maintain close working relationships with the dean, program director(s), instructional faculty, ROP programs and community health organizations. The successful candidate for the Counselor position will be responsible for: Providing comprehensive counseling services for students including academic, career, personal and life transitions counseling on an appointment basis; Providing group counseling sessions, orientations, and workshops; Assisting students in clarifying their educational goals, selection of courses, and developing Student Educational Plans (SEPs); Monitoring student progress through comprehensive electronic data systems; Maintaining close working relationships with program and other instructional faculty, feeder high schools, and community resources agencies; Working with a diverse population of students to emphasize strategies for educational planning and transfer preparation; Collaborating with instructional and counseling faculty, staff from other departments and programs, including Financial Aid, Admissions and Records, EOPS/CARE, DSP&S, CalWORKs, Puente, IDILE, SYMBAA, USEAA, Veterans/International, TRiO, Student Support Services, College Relations and Outreach, and other programs; Utilizing and keeping abreast of advanced counseling methods and student development theories that include integrating technology to support student learning and identification of career objectives; Providing counseling support specific to the needs of students on academic probation or disqualification; Conducting intake interviews, assessment interpretation, and use of multiple measures to refer students to the appropriate English and Math placements; Participating in the implementation of transfer and matriculation activities; Participating in outreach activities in the community and on campus; Utilizing and interpreting a variety of career assessment tools; Serving on and attending department, college, and district committees as needed; Participating in program review, student learning outcome development, and assessment to improve student learning; Providing services in a variety of settings and times, including evening and/or weekends, on-line or off-campus as needed; and Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom
  • Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling; or
  • A valid California Community College Credential; or
  • The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency)
  • (Note: If the degrees posted on your transcript(s) do not match exactlyas stated above, you mustpetition for equivalency. A bachelor's degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

  • Knowledge and utilization of instructional best practices for students in the classroom
  • Knowledge of California Community Colleges matriculation processes
  • Knowledge of student development theories pertaining to community college students
  • Ability to develop and maintain counseling notes in Starfish or similar electronic record keeping software in a timely and effective manner
  • Experience working effectively with student success programs
  • Knowledge and experience interpreting and utilizing articulation agreements and transfer requirements for community college students
  • Experience in using and interpreting a variety of career assessment tools
  • Experience in developing and presenting counseling related workshops and orientation sessions
  • Experience participating in outreach activities in the community and on campus
  • Experience providing counseling and follow-up services to students on probation or academic dismissal status
  • The ability to connect students with on/off campus resources to assist them in their college life management
  • Ability to use a broad range of technology pertaining to data collection and analysis for student success
  • Ability to work closely with faculty in academic divisions and engage in collegial dialogue on issues of student success
  • Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals
