Counselor - Enrollment Services BYU Enrollment Services Counselors guide students and others through admissions, financial aid, student accounts, scholarships, and records and registration, serving as trusted advisors who provide personalized counseling to help students navigate BYU and succeed. New hires complete a comprehensive 6–12-month training program with ongoing support, after which they are evaluated for certification; proficient counselors begin full duties, while those needing improvement enter a development program, and failure to achieve certification within 18 months of hire results in termination.

Requirements

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
  • Bachelor’s Degree with at least 2 years of experience, preferably in advising or counseling.
  • Manage admissions, financial aid, policies, and student support in a fast-paced environment while delivering excellent service.
  • Translate complex information into clear guidance; effectively counsel students, parents, and diverse audiences in writing and verbally.
  • Collaborate across teams, use university technology confidently, and prioritize deadlines while staying calm under pressure.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in counseling, psychology, or related field and a deep understanding and high familiarity with student services and/or the Federal Student Aid industry.
  • Experience with systems like PeopleSoft or Salesforce, embraces change, and supports integrated service models.
  • Inspire, guide, and support students with compassion and understanding throughout their journey.
  • Polished Lifelong Learner: Committed to continuous learning and delivering engaging, professional presentations.

Responsibilities

  • Counseling/Advising Advise and support students throughout their BYU journey, including admissions, credit transfers, academic progress, and navigating university resources, with a holistic and student-centered approach.
  • Serve as a financial aid expert by assisting students with federal aid, scholarships, resolving aid issues, and exercising professional judgment on financial aid petitions.
  • Represent BYU to assigned local high schools and provide proactive, compassionate advising for students needing additional support, serving as an approachable and knowledgeable guide.
  • Compliance Maintain Proficiency in Governing Policies and Procedures. Learn the ins and outs of admissions, financial aid, other university policies, and government mandated programs. Attend trainings and meetings to stay sharp on all the latest information.
  • General Review and score admission files while collaborating with campus departments to support student success.
  • Improve student processes through creative problem-solving and cross-campus coordination.
  • Communicate professionally and serve as a positive role model for students and student associates.
  • Participate in office, campus-wide committees, and complete assignments as directed by leadership.
