About The Position

The COTA performs patient treatments as indicated by the treatment plan. Documents treatments given, including frequent and objective measurements. Works with adult patients with clinical competency. Completes established competencies for the position within designated introductory period. Other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • MINIMUM EDUCATION: Associates Degree in Occupational Therapist Assistant. Active U.S. military service members or veterans with any military service, training or education verified and credited by an accredited COTA program is acceptable.
  • MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: No previous work experience needed.
  • REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE: Possession of current Texas State license
  • REQUIRED COURSES/ COMPLETIONS (e.g., CPR): BLS-Obtained through approved American Heart Association Training Center or the Military Training Network.

Nice To Haves

  • PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Previous COTA experience in inpatient/outpatient setting

Responsibilities

  • Performs selected tests and measurements in consultation with the therapist
  • Interprets the evaluation for frequently referred diagnosis, asking questions when necessary and seeking guidance concerning more complex situations
  • Reviews patient chart and progress prior to treatment and modifies the treatment accordingly within parameters of the treatment plan
  • Instructs and involves patient, family, and nursing staff in patient’s progress and discharge plans making appropriate discharge recommendations to the therapist and attends appropriate meetings
  • Uses appropriate modalities and procedures demonstrating understanding of the therapist’s selection and asking for clarification as necessary
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served, demonstrating knowledge of principles of growth and development over the lifespan
  • Maintains documentation on all treatments
  • Assures appropriate equipment performance prior to each use
  • Provides in-service to staff
  • Organizes schedule to reflect patient priorities and needs of other staff
  • Delegates responsibility to supportive personnel
  • Provides clinical education for COTA students
  • Informs supervisor of incidents, accidents, equipment failure or unusual physician or patient problems immediately
  • Utilizes resources efficiently and effectively
  • Maintains safe environment
  • Addresses patient population-specific needs
  • Participates in Performance Improvement activities
