Department: Health Information Management Job Description Job Description Works under the direction of the HIM/Privacy Director and the HIM Operations Manager. Evaluates and responds to requests for patient medical information. Performs other duties, specifically those of a HIM Specialist. Evaluates each request for patient medical information for appropriateness Identifies medical information to be copied. Maintains log (computer and/or manual) of all information requested and released. Prepares explanation letters to requestors with incomplete and/or inappropriate requests for information. Prepares bills for release of information and witness fees. Processes and responds to subpoenas and depositions. Represents Custodian of Records upon request. Responds to all requests in a timely manner making sure that all requests with a time date requirement are given immediate priority. Obtains medical information from other organizations as needed. Processes requests for patient information from other health care facilities; other departments in hospital, audits, etc. Ensures that records that may be pending litigation are secured in the locked file. Handles telephone requests for patient information both inside and outside the hospital. Special projects as assigned. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Work requires knowledge generally acquired through a high school education or GED.
  • At least two years of medical records experience required, preferably with one year in release of patient information.
