About The Position

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) employs nearly 2,300 team members operating nine facilities statewide, which house approximately 5,800 inmates. The department's focus includes inmate programming and education, physical and behavioral health care, re-entry services, and community programs, and is accredited by the American Correctional Association (ACA). Currently, we seek a self-motivated, results-driven candidate in the position of Corrections Major at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women located in York, Nebraska. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Jail Administration or a related behavioral science area plus four years progressively responsible correctional experience, two years of which must be in a supervisory capacity; OR an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Jail Administration or related behavioral science area plus six years progressively responsible correctional experience, two of which must be in a supervisory capacity; OR post-high school coursework/training in Criminal Justice, Jail Administration or related behavioral science area plus eight years progressively responsible correctional experience, two of which must be in a supervisory capacity.
  • Transcripts required prior to appointment.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the following pre-employment exams in this order: medical exam and, at a randomly announced time, pass a drug test.
  • Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid NE Corrections Training Program.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement policies and procedures which ensure security and control within and around the institution.
  • Oversee security and safety of assigned areas.
  • Ensure compliance with Departmental regulations, ACA.
  • Assist in supervising administration, investigations, operations, control and security.
  • Inspect on a regular basis all areas within the institution and its extended limit to ensure proper security and sanitation is maintained.
  • Conduct investigations and security audits.
  • Supervise staff in all custody ranks.
  • Assign and evaluate security staff work.
  • Develop and revise security post orders.
  • Prepare, update and maintain ACA files.
  • Conduct and evaluate on-the-job training of subordinates as well as ensuring annual training of security staff is completed.
  • Operate security and communication devices such as locks, hand radios, and intercoms.
