About The Position

The Correctional Specialist is a management position that provides leadership and supervision in all aspects of the Puyallup Tribal Restorative Correctional Facility’s corrections program. Duties are essential to the mission of the overall program and can affect the level, quality, and timeliness of services provided.

Requirements

  • Employment history with 8+ years of a Supervisory role focusing on the helping professions and/or a related field that has transferrable skills to the duties required.
  • Education may be substituted on a year-by-year basis for experience.
  • Knowledge of administration and management styles and techniques as they relate to the Puyallup Tribe is required.
  • Intermediate computer skills in Word, Microix and Excel are required.
  • Should have an understanding of Tribal budgets and the budget process.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to create and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to interpret a variety of instructions or information furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and ability to be insured.
  • Must have no felonies.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background check prior to and periodically after employment.
  • Must submit to drug testing prior to and periodically throughout employment.
  • Must maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Must be friendly, courteous, and tactful.
  • Must be dependable and have an ability to lead and work with a team.
  • Must be able to deal with stress and keep track of various tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Provides professional and technical assistance and supervision of the Puyallup Tribal Restorative Correctional Facility in planning, developing, coordinating, and implementing the corrections program.
  • Reports to the Chief of Police regarding foundational aspects of the administration of the Restorative Correctional Facility and programming.
  • Follows through on all assignments given in a timely fashion.
  • Makes well thought out recommendations for changes and takes initiative to improve restorative justice programming, in an effort to adhere to the Mission and Goals of the Restorative Correctional Facility.
  • Acts as primary corrections contact to the U.S. Department of the Interior and Bureau of Indian Affairs (Albuquerque and District VIII) and ensures the Puyallup Tribal Restorative Correctional Facility and related corrections programs are in alignment with the Public Law 93-638 contract requirements/and Self Governance requirements.
  • Provides assistance to the Chief of Police on the development of a comprehensive detention program evaluation system to aid in identifying deficiencies and/or revision of standards, policies & procedures, program requirements and methodologies and basic training needs.
  • Recommends changes and/or modifications necessary to meet current and future fiscal needs of Correctional facility.
  • Drafts or amends corrections policies and operating procedures and processes for approval and implementation.
  • Ensures that required staff training and certification is scheduled and accomplished providing a full complement of staffing for the Correctional facility.
  • Oversees scheduling to ensure twenty-four hour coverage.
  • Plans, organizes and supervises shifts and/or special programs within the department as instructed.
  • Assures proper reporting and statistical information as required.
  • Represents the Tribe/Department at conferences and meetings regarding Corrections matters and/or issues.
  • Maintains liaison with public and outside agencies to promote and enhance cooperation and understanding of the Puyallup Tribe of Indians Restorative Correctional Facility.
  • Ensures consistent supervisory practices and policies throughout the Correctional facility.
  • Provide support to other sworn police officers and Law Enforcement supervisors as needed.
  • Maintains working logs of the facility and conducts or schedules needed preventive maintenance for the facility.
  • Performs other Law Enforcement duties as assigned.
