Located in beautiful Asheville, NC. Craggy Correctional Center is a minimum and medium custody facility in Buncombe County with approximately 182 minimum and 408 medium security custody male offenders. Work in this class involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer II’s in medium-custody facilities or institutions, increasing the custody and security coverage. Positions assign lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post. Employees oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody, security and welfare of inmates is maintained. Employees arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy. Positions may serve as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC). Positions report directly to a Correctional Lieutenant II and/or the Correctional Assistant Superintendent. At this level, employees may supervise inmates in restrictive housing. Ensures that staff is fully trained and that proper conduct, actions and procedures are followed. Maintains facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulation and standards relating to facility maintenance and health and safety of offenders. Gives directions during drills, searches and in emergencies. May lead staff in carrying out tactical assignments. Responds to emergency situation, searches for escaped offenders and transports offenders. Conducts and/or supervises searches of offenders, their living quarters and work areas for contraband. Services as first line mediator for offender and/or staff conflicts. Investigates and takes action, where appropriate regarding security issues, incident, disputes and complaints. Prepares other duties as required.
