The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This position is expected to be available on 03/01/2026. Located in beautiful Asheville, NC. Craggy Correctional Center is a minimum and medium custody facility in Buncombe County with approximately 182 minimum and 408 medium security custody male offenders. Work in this class involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer II’s in medium-custody facilities or institutions, increasing the custody and security coverage. Positions assign lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post. Employees oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody, security and welfare of inmates is maintained. Employees arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy. Positions may serve as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC). Positions report directly to a Correctional Lieutenant II and/or the Correctional Assistant Superintendent. At this level, employees may supervise inmates in restrictive housing. Ensures that staff is fully trained and that proper conduct, actions and procedures are followed. Maintains facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulation and standards relating to facility maintenance and health and safety of offenders. Gives directions during drills, searches and in emergencies. May lead staff in carrying out tactical assignments. Responds to emergency situation, searches for escaped offenders and transports offenders. Conducts and/or supervises searches of offenders, their living quarters and work areas for contraband. Services as first line mediator for offender and/or staff conflicts. Investigates and takes action, where appropriate regarding security issues, incident, disputes and complaints. Prepares other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Applicants must pass a background check to be eligible for this job.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years six months of experience as a Correctional Officer, or two years of experience as Correctional Officer II; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.

  • Working knowledge of various policies, procedures, rules, and regulations associated with the control and management of inmates.
