About The Position

This is a REPOST. Previous applicants are still under consideration and do not need to reapply. Work in this class involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer II’s in medium-custody facilities or institutions, increasing the custody and security coverage. Positions assign lower level custody staff to a particular area or post. Employees oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody, security and welfare of inmates is maintained. Employees arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy. Positions may serve as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC). Positions report directly to a Correctional Lieutenant II and/or the Correctional Assistant Superintendent. At this level, employees may supervise inmates in restrictive housing.

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years six months of experience as a Correctional Officer, or two years of experience as Correctional Officer II; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.

Responsibilities

  • Assign lower-level custody staff to an area or post.
  • Evaluate and oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody, security, and welfare of offenders is maintained.
  • Coordinate work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
  • Manage a facility on occasion of being the highest-ranking custody staff on the premises or the Officer-in-Charge (OIC).
  • Ensure that staff are fully trained, and that proper conduct, actions, and procedures are being followed.
  • Maintain facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance, health, and safety of offenders.
  • Communicate effective instruction/direction during drills, searches, and in emergencies situations.
  • Respond to emergency situations such as; distress codes, escapes, and transportation of offenders.
  • Conduct and/or supervise searches of offenders, offender living areas and work areas for contraband.
  • Investigate and act when appropriate regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
  • Prepare, review reports and complete performance evaluations on subordinate staff.
