About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Salary Range: $41,206 - $72,113 The Correctional Sergeant III position is located at Pasquotank Correctional Institution in Elizabeth, North Carolina, Work in this class involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer III's in close-custody institutions with restrictive and controlled housing. Positions assign lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post. Employees oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody, security and welfare of inmates is maintained. This is a REPOST. Previous applicants are still under consideration and do not need to reapply. Employees arrange work schedules to ensure shift cover. Employees at this level supervise more staff than recognized in the lower-level Correctional Sergeant I or II. Positions report directly to a Correctional Lieutenant III and/or the Correctional Housing Unit Manager. Ensures that staff is fully trained and that proper conduct, actions and procedures are followed. Maintains facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance and health and safety of inmates. Gives direction during drills, searches, and in emergencies. May refer inmates to restrictive housing for temporary assignment. May lead staff in carrying out tactical assignment(s). Responds to emergency situations, searches for escaped offenders, and transports offenders. Conducts and/or supervises searches of offenders, their living quarters, and work areas for contraband. Investigates and takes action, where appropriate, regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints. Prepares and reviews a variety of reports. Completes annual performance evaluations and assists in assessing, evaluating, and implementing employee discipline. Conducts staff briefing sessions. Performs other related duties as required. Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission. This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits. Note to Current State Employees: The salary grade for this position is NC09. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience as a Correctional Officer, or two years of experience as a Correctional Officer III; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
