The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. If you are looking for a rewarding career, please consider the opportunity to apply for the Correctional Sergeant I position located at Craggy Correctional Center. Located in beautiful Asheville, NC. Craggy Correctional Center is a minimum and medium custody facility in Buncombe County with approximately 182 minimum and 408 medium security custody male offenders. Work in this class involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer I’s in minimum-custody facilities, increasing the custody and security coverage. Positions assign lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post. Position must oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody, security and welfare of offenders is maintained. Position arranges work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy. Positions may at times be the highest-ranking custody staff on the grounds or the Officer-in-Charge (OIC). Positions report to a Correctional Captain I and/or a Correctional Assistant Superintendent. Ensures that staff is fully trained and that proper conduct, actions and procedures are followed. Maintains facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulation and standards relating to facility maintenance and health and safety of offenders. Gives directions during drills, searches and in emergencies. May lead staff in carrying out tactical assignments. Responds to emergency situations, searches for escaped offenders and transports offenders. Conducts and/or supervises searches of offenders, their living quarters and work areas for contraband. Investigates and takes action, where appropriate regarding security issues, incident, disputes and complaints. Prepares other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of the overall operation of correctional facilities.
  • Working knowledge of various policies, procedures, rules, and regulations associated with the control and management of inmates.
  • Applicants must pass a background check to be eligible for this job.
  • This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.
  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience as a correctional officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
