About The Position

This internal advertisement is for a SES (Selected Exempt Service) position located at Central Office in Tallahassee, FL in the Bureau of Classification Management. The mission of the Bureau of Classification Management at the Florida Department of Corrections (FDC) is to ensure the accurate and effective classification of inmates. The Bureau of Classification Management is dedicated to maintaining a fair and systematic classification process that supports the overall goals of the FDC in enhancing public safety and providing effective correctional services. This position is not a telework position and is required to report to the FDC office in the area it serves.

Requirements

  • Understand corrections and administrative principles, the criminal justice system, and problem-solving techniques.
  • Proficient in using the Offender Based Information System (OBIS/CDC), web applications, and Microsoft Office.
  • Progressive leadership experience in a correctional management, criminal justice, or related field.
  • Ability to lead and manage teams, develop and implement strategic initiatives, and drive organizational change.
  • Proven track record of effective decision-making, policy development and operational oversight.
  • Ability to interpret and apply Federal, State, and local laws, rules, and regulations, along with Department policies and procedures.
  • Conduct detailed reviews of data, audits, and reports.
  • Use independent judgment to analyze data, draw conclusions, and make recommendations.
  • Gather information by examining records and interviewing individuals.
  • Communicate effectively with people at all levels using strong interpersonal skills and maintain confidentiality.
  • Work well with others, support team initiatives, and demonstrate flexibility and respect.
  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Meet scheduled timeframes for audits and follow-up audits.
  • Must possess a valid Driver License.
  • Must be a current FDC employee.
  • Must have knowledge of the unannounced classification auditing process.
  • Must have at least TWO (2) years of supervisory experience OR FOUR (4) years of Senior Classification Officer experience.
  • Must have at least FIVE (5) years of experience in classification and/or security.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct and Oversee Audits: Lead unannounced on-site and desk audits to check internal controls, records, and procedures at various institutions. Ensure audits are accurate and comply with laws and department policies.
  • Supervise and Train Auditors: Manage and coach a team of Unannounced Classification Auditors, review their work for accuracy, and allocate their responsibilities.
  • Develop and Implement Audit Plans: Create audit programs, perform tests to evaluate internal controls, and develop annual audit plans. Document findings and prepare reports with recommendations.
  • Monitor Compliance and Corrective Actions: Follow up on audit results to ensure institutions take corrective actions for non-compliance. Keep track of open audit issues and their resolutions.
  • Communicate and Report: Maintain open communication with management and staff, provide updates on audit status, and present audit results and recommendations to the appropriate levels of management.
