About The Position

The State of Connecticut, Department of Correction (DOC) is recruiting Correctional Plumbers & Steamfitters for the following facilities: Corrigan Correctional Institution, Montville, CT District 1 Maintenance, Somers, CT Osborn Correctional Institution, Somers, CT York Correctional Institution, East Lyme, CT Please note, this recruitment may be used to fill vacancies throughout State correctional facilities as openings occur within the next year. These positions are full time on first shift, Monday through Friday, from 7:45 am until 3:00 pm. Selected candidates will be required to attend a 14-week paid hazardous duty training at the Maloney Center for Training & Staff Development located in Cheshire, CT. The Department of Correction shall strive to be a leader in progressive correctional practices and partnered re-entry initiatives to support responsive evidence-based practices geared toward supporting reintegration and reducing recidivism under the Department's supervision. Safety and security shall be a priority component of this responsibility, coinciding with an unwavering respect for the human dignity of staff, victims, citizens and offenders. In a Department of Correction facility or district this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in the repair, monitoring and installation of plumbing, heating and steam-fitting activities.

Requirements

  • Three (3) years of experience as a plumber and/or steamfitter.
  • One (1) year of the General Experience must have been at a highly skilled level.
  • Considerable knowledge of materials, methods, tools and equipment involved in plumbing and steam-fitting trades
  • Knowledge of building codes
  • Knowledge of maintenance and repair of sprinkler systems
  • Knowledge of operation of institutional steam boilers and heating systems
  • Skills interpersonal skills
  • Skills oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to plan, layout and schedule maintenance assignments
  • Ability to operate and interpret computerized and automated control systems
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports
  • Ability to read blueprints and schematics
  • Ability to work in confined spaces
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues relating to plumbing and steam-fitting
  • Ability to instruct inmates or other employees in techniques and skills of plumbing and steam-fitting
  • Ability to perform under stress and remain stable in pressure situations

  • Incumbents in this class must have reached their 18th birthday.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to successfully complete a formal training course in correctional work to develop the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the class.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to respond to after-hour emergencies as requested by facility supervisors.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
  • Incumbents in this class must have general good health, be free from any disease or injury which would impair health or usefulness and possess and retain sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance and visual and auditory acuity required to perform all the duties of the class.
  • A comprehensive medical examination, including a controlled substance screening, will be required of all applicants upon a conditional offer of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with repair and maintenance of commercial plumbing systems and associated controls
  • Valid P1 (Unlimited Plumbing Contractor) or P2 (Unlimited Journeyperson Plumber) License

Responsibilities

  • Repair of critical systems such as: Drinking (potable) piping distribution/pumping; Hot water heating; -Steam distribution piping; Drain (sanitary) piping, macerator (grinding, and pumping; Cross connection (back flow prevention); Cell fixtures (toilets, sinks and showers).
  • Supervising assigned inmates at a Correctional Institution
  • Keeping record of tool/inventory control
  • Protecting the health and safety of the public, staff and inmates;
  • Snow and ice removal to maintain safe access for the police, medical, staff and public;
  • Maintaining mandated compliances with Federal & State statute and agency directives and policies by assuring humane conditions of confinement in the facility through repair and maintenance.
  • Plans, lays out and schedules work
  • Instructs inmates in methods and techniques of measuring, cutting, threading and installing pipes, valves, gauges, and other fixtures involving the use of hand tools, pipe cutters, and pipe threading and bending machines
  • Determines defects and maintains piping system for steam, gas, water, air and pressure
  • Trains inmates in reading blueprints and schematic drawings to determine work aids required and sequence of installations
  • Performs preventative maintenance
  • Utilizes troubleshooting techniques to address problems with plumbing and steam-fitting systems
  • Repairs fire protection systems
  • Performs air quality testing
  • Acts as liaison with outside vendors, contractors and agency staff
  • Works on specialized equipment relating to trade area
  • Performs work on high-pressure steam equipment
  • Tests and monitors pumps, boilers and heating systems
  • Keeps records and makes necessary reports
  • Maintains custody and discipline and evaluates the performance of each inmate assigned to work area
  • May perform supplemental duties related to other trade disciplines based on experience, knowledge, skills and agency needs
  • May purchase equipment
  • May physically restrain inmates, quell disturbances and otherwise assist security forces in emergencies
  • May be required to operate a motor vehicle
  • Performs related duties as required
