About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Reporting to and working closely with a Correctional Captain II, this position provides supervision of subordinate staff, conducts shift line-up, makes shift assignments, and inspects personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming an assigned post.

Requirements

  • MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years six months of experience as a Correctional Sergeant Or Two years of experience as a Correctional Sergeant II Or An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting investigations and performing searches of persons, places, and objects.
  • Completing, reviewing, and maintaining time reports, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations, and administrative forms.
  • Performing security inspections of the facility and grounds. Monitoring posts to ascertain that officers are alert, discipline is being maintained, and assignments are carried out properly.
  • Performing rescue functions to include CPR, basic first aid, physically removing people from dangerous areas, and using fire-fighting equipment, such as fire hoses, extinguishers, and breathing apparatuses.
  • Identifying training needs and coordinating delivery of training to subordinate staff.
  • Accounting for persons and funds to insure that all equipment is operational and ready for use.
  • Serving as the Officer-In-Charge in the absence of the Correctional Captain II.
