About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! This position is located at Craven Correctional Institution, a Diagnostic Processing Center located in Vanceboro, NC with a population of 850 offenders and approximately 360 staff. This position provides supervision of subordinate staff. Conducts shift line-up, makes shift assignments, and inspects all personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming an assigned post. Completes, reviews, and maintains time reports, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations, and administrative forms. Accounts for persons and funds and ensures that all assigned equipment is operationally ready. Identifies training needs and coordinates delivery of training to subordinate staff.

Requirements

  • Documented supervisory skills in a prison facility
  • Knowledge of facility operations
  • Knowledge of Prisons' policy and procedures
  • Documented report writing skills
  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years six months of experience as a Correctional Sergeant, or two years of experience as a Correctional Sergeant II; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.

  • The Prisons Eastern Region prefers candidates with no less than 2 years’ work experience as a Correctional Sergeant
