About The Position

The Arlington County Sheriff’s Office is seeking Licensed Practical Nurses to support the delivery of routine, urgent, and emergency care to individuals in custody, working in a fast-paced environment that requires strong clinical judgment, teamwork, and adherence to secure facility protocols. These positions perform direct patient care, support medical and mental health operations, and ensure consistency with nursing standards, established procedures, and regulatory requirements. Work is performed under the direction of a Correctional Registered Nurse.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited licensed practical nurse program with a diploma in nursing
  • Some clinical experience in a health care setting
  • Active Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) License in the state of Virginia
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

  • Working with individuals experiencing behavioral health challenges or substance withdrawal
  • Performing clinical assessments and documenting care in an electronic health record system

  • Coordinating care within multidisciplinary healthcare teams

Responsibilities

  • Providing direct and routine nursing care, including vital signs, glucometer checks, medication administration, and basic clinical assessments
  • Conducting intake screenings to assess physical and behavioral health needs, verify medications, and identify urgent concerns
  • Evaluating patient complaints and performing triage during sick call, referring to supervisory nursing staff as needed
  • Coordinating care with mental health providers, medical staff, and external partners when appropriate
  • Ensuring timely and accurate documentation in the electronic health record (EHR), including progress notes, medication records, and required logs
  • Supporting safe patient movement and communicating safety or behavioral concerns to nursing supervisors
  • Assisting with wound care, dressing changes, and other routine clinical procedures
  • Responding to medical emergencies, initiating basic life support measures, and assisting fellow nursing staff
  • Participating in audits, quality improvement efforts, and compliance reviews
  • Performing additional duties as assigned
