About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Reporting to the Associate Warden of Custody & Operations at a medium custody male correctional facility, this position is responsible for first line supervision of Correctional Housing Unit Manager I's. This position's responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Assuming responsibility for the overall management of the correctional housing unit. 2. Providing leadership and guidance to subordinate staff and ensuring staff are alert, properly trained, informed and prepared to perform their job responsibilities under a variety of conditions. 3. Coordinating work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implementing operational procedures and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to policy. 4. Managing a facility on occasion of being the highest-ranking custody staff on the premises or the Officer-in-Charge (OIC). 5. Ensuring that staff are fully trained and that proper conduct, actions, and procedures are being followed. 6. Maintaining facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance, health, and safety of offenders. 7. Communicating effective instruction/direction during drills, searches, and in emergencies situations. 8. Responding to emergency situations such as; distress codes, escapes, and transportation of offenders. 9. Conducting and/or supervise searches of offenders, offender living areas and work areas for contraband. 10. Investigating and acting when appropriate regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints. 11. Preparing, reviewing reports and completing performance evaluations on subordinate staff. 12. Serving on a variety of institutional committees as needed. (Salary Range: $37, 782 - $66,120)

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND five years of correctional experience, two of which must have been at the supervisory level; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

Nice To Haves

  • Documented report writing skills.
  • Documented knowledge of supportive counseling techniques and/or interviewing techniques for intake assessments
  • Documented knowledge of Prisons' Policy and Procedures and/or Facility Operations.
