About The Position

Employees in this class carry a caseload of inmates, which involves supportive counseling, conducting assessments, developing case plans, answering and following up on inmate questions and problems, and making recommendations to the classification committee. Employees also assist in major dynamic programs or coordinate major or specialized programs for the rehabilitation of inmates, such as inmate work assignments, work release, education, or recreation; as well as transition planning and coordinating. Employees in this class plan and coordinate transition (re-entry) prior to parole or release into the community. Reporting to the Correctional Program Supervisor at a multi-level custody male correctional facility, this position performs regular periodic classification reviews, needs assessments, plans, job assignments, program referrals and regular scheduled one-on-one contact for the purposes of correctional and/or motivational counseling. Other job duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following: Providing transitional information and assisting with housing. Providing recommendations for the classification upon offender's review and assisting with onsite activities. Communicating effectively with other staff, offenders and the general public. Working under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders, who can become physically violent and verbally abusive at times. Defending oneself against attack and performing crisis interventions to include suicide prevention. Preparing written reports which accurately reflect data reviewed by various sources. Reviewing, analyzing, and evaluating various documents and behavior data gathered from interviews, written documentation and personal observation. This posting is for multiple vacancies: positions 60063563 and 60063565. This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits with established working hours of Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm and may require working beyond normal work schedule to meet business need.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Recreation or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of custody experience within the North Carolina Department of Public Safety; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
