About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Reporting to a Correctional Programs Supervisor, this position is responsible for carrying a caseload of offenders, conducting initial assessments of offender needs, developing case plans, answering and following up on offender questions and problems, and making recommendations to the classification committee. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: About Southern Correctional Institution: Southern Correctional Institution is located in Troy, North Carolina and houses up to 700 male offenders in a close, medium, and minimum custody facility.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of supportive counseling techniques
  • MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Recreation, or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution Or High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of custody experience within the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction Or An equivalent combination of training and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting in major dynamic programs or coordinating major specialized programs for the rehabilitation of offenders, such as, offender work assignments, work release, education, or recreation; as well as transition planning and coordinating.
  • Planning and coordinating transition (re-entry) prior to parole or release into the community for offenders.
  • Providing Supportive Counseling techniques and interviewing skills.
  • Working knowledge of Prisons’ policies and procedures.
  • Gathering and evaluating information concerning an individual’s past experience(s), training, attitude, social environment, and mental capabilities.
  • Working knowledge of correctional programs and services available to individuals from the community and other public and private programs.
  • Developing, implementing, coordinating, and supervising a program within the framework of Prisons’ policies and procedures.
  • Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Working under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders, who can become physically violent and/or verbally abusive.
  • Defending oneself against attacks by violent persons.
  • Working some evening hours, weekends, and holidays.
