About The Position

This position is located at Craven Correctional Institution in Vanceboro, NC, Craven County. The prison is a Medium Custody Adult Male Felon Diagnostic Processing Center which houses 850 offenders. Employees in this class carry a caseload of inmates, which involves supportive counseling, conducting assessments, developing case plans, answering and following up on inmate questions and problems, and making recommendations to the classification committee. Key Duties Include: - In addition to regular case management duties, each case manager will also assist in major dynamic programs or coordinate major or specialized programs for the rehabilitation of offenders, such as offender work assignments, education, or recreation; substance abuse programs, community volunteers, offender library and special projects involving offender art show/writing contests, volunteer banquets, as well as transition planning and coordinating. - Employees in this class plan and coordinate transition (re-entry) prior to parole or release into the community. - Case managers may have mental health offenders on their caseload which requires additional time to manage. - Case managers are also often required to interact with community organizations in their performance of duties.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of policies and procedures of prisons.
  • Documented knowledge of techniques of supporting counseling and interviewing.
  • Documented knowledge of correctional programs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Recreation or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of custody experience within the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
