About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees, responsible for safeguarding lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation, as well as the care, custody, and supervision of adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons, probation/parole officers, and divisions such as Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations, and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. This position is located at Dan River Prison Work Farm in Caswell, NC, a minimum-custody prison housing male offenders, primarily minimum custody. Employees in this class report to the Programs Supervisor I and provide programs for the rehabilitation of offenders in the prison system. The Dan River Prison Work Farm is situated on a 187.5-acre site in Blanch, NC, housing felon and misdemeanant minimum custody adult male offenders. Work assignments for offenders include food service, maintenance, janitorial, other institutional jobs, and maintenance work at Caswell Correctional Center and the offender construction program.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Recreation or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of custody experience within the North Carolina Department of Public Safety; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

  • Documented knowledge of case management practices, or supportive counseling techniques and/or interviewing techniques for intake assessments.

Responsibilities

  • Developing case plans, answering and following up on offender questions and problems, and making recommendations to the classification committee.
  • Assisting in major dynamic programs or coordinating major or specialized programs for the rehabilitation of offenders, such as offender work assignments, work release, education, or recreation as well as transition planning and coordinating.
  • Planning and coordinate transition (re-entry) prior to parole or release into the community
