About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! This position is located at Caswell Correctional Center a medium custody male facility located in Blanch, North Carolina. This facility houses approximately 460 male offenders. The individual assigned to this position will directly report to the Correctional Program Supervisor. The primary purpose of this position is to provide a variety of program services to offenders.

Requirements

  • Documented knowledge of case management practices, or supportive counseling techniques and/or interviewing techniques for intake assessments
  • Effective July 1, 2025, candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed from the class specification. The knowledge, skills, and abilities listed in the vacancy announcement should be used as management preferences and be used to screen for the most qualified pool of applicants.
  • Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Recreation or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of custody experience within the North Carolina Department of Public Safety; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

Responsibilities

  • Assessing offender behavior and developing counseling strategies to achieve desired offender progress.
  • Answering offender questions, giving information about classification and sentencing status, corresponding with offender families, and providing supportive counseling.
  • Organizing and directing the activities of various rehabilitation programs provided for offender.
  • Coordinating community resources, planning and coordinating transition (re-entry) prior to parole or release into the community.
  • Making recommendations to the offender classification committees on an inmate’s program involvement or custody level change.
  • Working with inmates whose problems, needs and comprehension levels vary greatly.
  • Working in all sections of a Medium Custody prison facility which places them in constant contact with offenders.
  • Serving in a custody role during certain activities.
  • Working some evening hours, weekends, and holidays.
