About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Salary Range - $35,984.00 - $62,971.00 Catawba Correctional Center is located in Newton, NC. This is a minimum-security facility that houses adult males. This facility offers reentry that provides work release. Effective verbal and written communication with other staff, inmates and the general public. Must be capable of defending oneself against attack by violent persons. Monitor off site programs, which may require operation of a motor vehicle in a safe and secure manner at any time of the day and in varying weather and road conditions. Work under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders who can become physically violent and verbally abusive. Conduct continuous visual and audio surveillance of assigned work area. Accurately operate various office machines. Prepare written reports and forms which accurately reflect information reviewed from various sources. Demonstrate and instruct offenders in the proper safe use of tools, equipment, and supplies. Review, analyze and evaluate various documents and behavioral data gathered from interviews, written documentation, and personal observation, perform crisis interventions and routine counseling to include suicide prevention. This position reports to Program Supervisor. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences: Documented knowledge of supportive counseling techniques. Applicants must pass a background check to be eligible for this job. Necessary Special Qualifications: Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission. This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits. Note to Current State Employees: The salary grade for this position is NC07. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Recreation or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of custody experience within the North Carolina Department of Public Safety; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Applicants must pass a background check to be eligible for this job.
