About The Position

The Middlesex Sheriff’s Office (“MSO”) is seeking a qualified professional to work as a Correction Officer/Locksmith (“Locksmith”) to work in the Maintenance department at the Middlesex Jail and House of Correction in Billerica, MA. The work schedule for this position is Monday through Friday with an eight (8) hour flex shift between the hours 6:00a.m. to 6:00p.m. The hours and days off are subject to change at the discretion of Management and the needs of the Maintenance department. Under direct supervision of the Senior Correction Officer (Sergeant) or other employees of higher grade, the Locksmith is responsible for the ongoing operation, functionality, control and maintenance of all security apparatus throughout the MSO, including locks, keys, security doors, gates, burglar alarm systems, and restraints. This is a full-time, non-exempt position covered under a collective bargaining agreement (NEPBA, Local 500). Additional duties and responsibilities of the Locksmith include, but are not limited, to: Accounts for and maintains all tools and equipment used in the lock shop and maintenance; responsible for maintaining the computerized inventory and recordkeeping of the issuance, location, type and replacement of institutional keys and keys assigned to staff; manages the functionality and operation of all electronic key control cabinets (currently the KeyWatcher System); installs, repairs and provides preventive maintenance on all locks and locking systems and maintains a log on all work performed; maintains a schedule and completion of preventive maintenance on all locks and locking systems; assists and collaborates with members of the Facilities and Maintenances staff, as well as Information Technology and Security Departments when needed; responsible for cleanliness, safety and security of work area. When necessary, patrols facility; makes rounds and takes head counts; observes conduct and behavior of inmates, noting significant behavioral patterns; prevents disturbances; notes and investigates suspicious inmate behavior, including the possibility of contraband, by searching individuals, vehicles, mail, packages, and inmate quarters; develops working relationships with inmates by referring individuals to appropriate supportive services, as needed, to aid in rehabilitation; prepares reports relative to fires, disturbances, accidents, security breaches, and monthly evaluations on inmates; accounts for inmate whereabouts; may function as a Line Operational Officer as needed; enforces regulations pertaining to meals, recreation, shakedowns, showers, visits, key control, and inmate movement; assists in the training of new Officers; will be required to work mandatory overtime based on operational needs; must have the flexibility to work on multiple shifts as required; and performs other related work as required; Performing and/or assist in other duties as required by MSO management.

Requirements

  • Must be a bonded locksmith and have five (5) years of documented experience in repairing and installation of locks
  • Ability to attend a thirteen-week MSO Correction Officer/Basic Training Academy at the discretion of MSO management
  • Must maintain the yearly training standard as required by the MSO and have the ability to attend additional training as required by the MSO
  • Strong written and communication skills
  • Working knowledge of computers and various computer systems
  • Valid Driver’s License, the right to legally operate in MA and an acceptable driving record
  • In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire
  • Must have an active valid driver’s license, the right to legally operate a motor vehicle in Massachusetts, an acceptable driving record and ability to pass a criminal background check
