About The Position

This position is responsible for: Serves as a prospective candidate for officership in The Salvation Army by assisting an assigned Corps by learning to administer and develop the day-to-day operations of the Corps; develops and leads religious programs; participates in social service programs providing assistance to people in need; coordinates arrangements for seasonal programs and recruits/supervises volunteers for the same; performs secretarial, receptionist, and bookkeeping work in order to learn the duties of the Corps Officer. Key Responsibilities: Assists in the promotion of Corps growth goals and plans as well as Army programs and services in the community. Undergoes a continuing education program that is designed to develop skills for ministry as well as prepare for the College for Officers Training. Plans, develops, prepares, and leads specific youth ministries programs; leads or assists with regular meetings for Corps Cadets, Y.P.L., Adventure Corps, and Junior Legion; prepares and coordinates or assists with production of Christian program materials and newsletters; assists in Sunday School teacher development. Assists in coordinating Adult Ministries Programs and actively participates in leading the same. Plans, prepares and leads the League of Mercy Program by visiting Corps members and the general public who are sick or elderly and in need of special attention. Assists in training and developing Corps Band and singing groups as well as leading them in performance as necessary. Monitors and/or assists in the day-to-day operation of a Service Unit and/or Thrift Store; assists in processing mail and where appropriate may assign work to employees as dictated by correspondence; schedules and monitors employee's work hours; makes arrangements for disbursement of donated goods; assists in planning and supervising seasonal projects such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, League of Mercy, etc. Performs varied and routine secretarial and receptionist duties for the Corps office; prepares correspondence and bulletins, answers the telephone, files documents, retrieves and sorts mail and assists in recording/collating monthly statistics. Performs bookkeeping functions of the Corps; receipts income, prepares bank deposits, reconciles bank accounts, posts receipts and expenses, pays invoices, and performs month-end closing of books. Assists in preparing statistical reports as well as monthly reports from the Corps Youth Reporter Book. Assists in the coordination of Sunday activities in the absence of the Corps Officer. Drives Salvation Army vehicle and transports Corps members to/from Corps programs; operates vehicles in compliance with established policies and procedures; ensures vehicles are properly serviced, maintained, and repaired. Assists in ensuring that the Corps building and grounds are maintained in a neat, safe, and attractive manner; may perform or oversee a variety of light maintenance details necessary to maintain the proper upkeep of The Salvation Army facilities which includes but may not be limited to grounds keeping and floor care. Coordinates details associated with annual Christmas Programs including the Christmas Kettles, Angel Tree, Toy Shop, etc.; recruits and schedules volunteers and provides required materials. Coordinates arrangements for summer camp programs; schedules transportation and prepares parent notifications. Serves as outreach worker responsible for coordinating arrangements for major events such as Vacation Bible School. Assists in the planning and conducting of Sunday and mid-week services. Recruits, trains, and supervises volunteers for Corps programs. Coordinates visitation of first-time visitors to Sunday meetings and other activities; visits regular members and absentees; serves on-call to visit persons in emerging/crisis situations at discretion of the Corps Officer. Invites persons served in mission, along with program constituents, to Corps meetings

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Two years of experience participating in ministerial work, highly desirable
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License
  • or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Nice To Haves

  • ability to read, write and communicate foreign languages such as Spanish, Korean, etc. preferred.
