About The Position

The University Police department within the Division of Administration and Finance is dedicated to ensuring the University Community's right to a crime free environment through exemplary and professional service. Our mission is to partner with students, staff, and faculty to support a safe, inclusive, and welcoming university for Titans to thrive. Pursuing a holistic safety vision to evolve university policing to new heights of excellence within the CSU and beyond. We seek an exceptional individual to join our team as the Corporal. The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to inclusivity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness. Under general supervision of a Sergeant, the Corporal performs a variety of general law enforcement and holistic safety duties. Corporals support and participate in community engagement and presentations to help build and maintain trust within the Titan community. They are team leads and act as the Watch Commander in the absence of a Sergeant. Work assignments typically require the Corporal to exercise independent judgement and action. Corporals perform general law enforcement work that may include, but are not limited to patrolling the campus property on foot, bicycle, and vehicles; maintain order; enforcing laws, rules and regulations; apprehending and processing violators; initiating police action; participating in community engagement activities; preparing written reports; aiding faculty, staff, students, and guests in safety matters; and serving as the lead or senior member on a campus patrol operation. Corporals may perform specialty assignments, including but not limited to investigations/detectives, crime prevention specialists, range master, and/or community relations specialist. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or the equivalent and graduation from a Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) academy with a Basic Course Certificate.
  • Two or more years of active law enforcement experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of current law enforcement methods and procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of current criminal codes and laws.
  • Thorough knowledge of effective investigative techniques and procedures.
  • Possession of effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to write clear and comprehensive reports.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound judgments.
  • Ability to provide effective leadership and direction to field personnel during assigned shift.
  • A valid California driver’s license.
  • Basic Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certificate.

  • Ability to foster positive relationships with the campus community.
  • Ability to provide effective leadership, training, and direction to assigned personnel.
  • Proficiently maintain accurate personnel time records and prepare statistical reports of crime trends if necessary.
  • Exposure to or aptitude for community-based policing programs in the areas of procedural justice or have participated in programs such as Tools for Tolerance or Game Changer.
