About The Position

The Core Room Technician / Core Maker & Setup Technician is responsible for producing, assembling, and maintaining high-quality sand cores used in the metal casting process. This position involves operating and maintaining core-making equipment, assembling cores according to specifications, performing quality inspections, and ensuring minimal machine downtime. The role supports core production from setup through final delivery to the molding department.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Effective computer usage
  • Manual dexterity in order to use file on cores
  • Consistently able to: Manually lift and move product and materials up to 50 lbs. through regular physical exertion, including but not limited to reach forward, reach overhead, lift, carry, crouch, and bend
  • Power grip and wrist turn, including the use of hand tools and/or steering fork truck
  • Walk, sit, or stand for up to 12 hours with intermittent breaks
  • Push/pull up to 100 lbs.
  • See, inspect, handle and evaluate product quality
  • Read and understand written English language work instructions
  • Work in non-climate controlled environments, including hot and humid conditions
  • Climb ladders and stairs of varying heights
  • Wear task-based Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) provided by LSI

Responsibilities

  • Operate core-making machines and hand tools to produce cores per job specifications and quality standards.
  • Read and interpret work instructions and shop packets to ensure accurate core production.
  • Assemble cores and core boxes using glue, clamps, wire, bolts, rams, or machines.
  • Clean parting lines, raised vent areas, and remove flash from cores.
  • Cut or drill spouts and pouring holes; size hardened cores as needed.
  • Apply core wash and rack completed cores for storage or delivery.
  • Inspect finished cores for cracks, defects, and dimensional accuracy; perform repairs or reject as needed.
  • Use mud compound to perform core repairs.
  • Calibrate machines for correct sand and additive mix ratios.
  • Clean vents and inspect machines before operation to ensure safety and functionality.
  • Retrieve, move, and mount core boxes into machines using hoists and tools.
  • Set machine controls according to work instructions.
  • Perform startup checks and operate machines to verify proper functioning.
  • Clean, lubricate, and maintain core machines per manufacturer's schedule.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting and minor repairs; replace parts as needed to prevent downtime.
  • Monitor oil and grease levels to ensure proper machine lubrication.
  • Complete accurate production records, including core counts, SPC charts, scrap reports, and shift documentation.
  • Track assembly and machine performance metrics to support continuous improvement efforts.
