Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Special Education, or Master’s Degree with endorsement in Special Education, or Master’s Degree in Administration Supervision with endorsement in Special Education with at least 10 years teaching and leadership experience required.
  • In-depth familiarity with curriculum, instruction, and supervision.
  • Ability to develop a plan for implementing Instructionally Appropriate IEPs within the confines of HCDE’s continuum of services for Exceptional Education.
  • Extensive knowledge and abilities in supporting teachers with collaborative planning and co-teaching.
  • Extensive experience and proven skills in instruction for students with a range of disability classifications and academic skillsets.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook, Power School, Easy IEP, and other technical support areas as needed.
  • Sensitivity to diversity in all its forms.
  • Consistently delivers high quality outcomes under tight deadlines.
  • Exhibits excellent attendance and reliability.
  • Appropriately supervises and treats others with respect and value.
  • Effective conflict resolution skills.
  • Endorsement Code: Any K-12 special education endorsement code.
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills to deal effectively with students, Board members, educators, parents, and community members.
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Demonstrate excellent planning, organizational, problem-solving, decision-making, and time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as an instructional specialist and resource to teachers and administrators across the district.
  • Exhibit skills in positively influencing instructional change on the district-wide level.
  • Ensure specially designed instruction is received by all students receiving exceptional education services across the district.
  • Bridge instruction and compliance to address access to the least restrictive environment and grade level content.
  • Identify issues and forecasting needs/trends and systematize successful academic growth and achievement of students, particularly in the areas of instruction, curriculum and third grade literacy.
  • Directly support the progress toward the goals in the HCS strategic plan, especially those addressing literacy and student growth in elementary school.
  • Collaborate and partner with local and state organizations to ensure all elementary school students have access to the instruction and curriculum necessary to make meaningful academic progress.
  • Collaborate with the Response to Intervention team to plan for instructional access for students receiving exceptional education support; ensure the implementation of evidence-based and research-based curriculum and intervention.
  • Design and provide professional development and training to staff in the areas of instruction, curriculum, assessment for students receiving exceptional education support. Design and facilitate professional development on co-teaching and co-planning.
  • Exhibit a sound knowledge of instructional technology resources utilized in the district and emerging in the field of education, curriculum, and instruction.
  • Assume initiative to explore issues and find potential innovative solutions and special projects.
  • Anticipates, identifies, and resolves complex obstacles to ensure success of students with disabilities, exceptional education and general education teachers and administrators, as well as exceptional education department colleagues.
  • Perform duties as assigned by the Executive Director and the Director of Specially Designed Instruction.
  • Consistently exhibit appropriate verbal and written communication skills, as well as overall effective supervision of staff.
  • Collaborate with principals and directors to use Project Coach, Instructional Practice Guide, and Academic Press and Personalization to evaluate and provide feedback to teachers aligned to professional growth and development. Partner with instructional coaches to plan for teacher development using the Teacher Development Framework, Project Coach, and Academic Press and Personalization.
  • Ensures compliance with district, state, and federal policies, regulations, and laws.
  • Communicates through proper channels to alert the Executive Director and other appropriate personnel of emerging problems.
  • Consults and collaborates with Hamilton County Central Office support staff and leaders, State Department of Education, administrators, district employees, other officials and stakeholders.
  • Adheres to the Teacher Code of Ethics as defined by Tennessee Law.
  • Works collaboratively with all stakeholders.
  • Acts in a professional, respectful, and courteous manner at all times.
  • Creates a customer-focused climate and provides quality services and support to school and other stakeholders.
  • Complies with applicable district, state, and federal codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
