About The Position

Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Food Service Director and/or Food Service Supervisor, prepares, seasons and cooks food for hospital patients, employees, and visitors as well as all other assigned duties. Hill Crest Behavioral Health is an acute care, 194 bed inpatient psychiatric facility located in Birmingham, AL, providing mental health services for adolescents and adults. We do not treat medically compromised individuals beyond our scope of care. Requirements

  • High School graduate or G.E.D. preferred
  • One year experience in quantity food preparation.
  • Basic computer skills. Must be able to read, write, make simple calculations and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Must have formal on-the-job training in food preparation, cooking, estimating quantities of food needs, storage of food supplies, requirements of sanitation and safety in handling food and equipment.
  • Must have knowledge of kitchen equipment.
  • Must be familiar with standardized recipes and food products.
  • Relates to and provides for the need of patients relevant to their age and cultural needs
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Food Handler Card or ServSafe Certification.
  • Verifiable HS Diploma or GED preferred
  • One year food service experience preferred
  • Food Handler Card or ServSafe Certification preferred
  • Must be able to read, write, and follow written and oral instructions
  • New hires are required to attend 8 business days of New Employee Orientation on day shift, ormally 8:00 am – 4:00 pm Monday through Friday, then M-W of the next week. (No interruptions)
  • Must successfully pass background check (includes criminal history, Child Abuse and Neglect Registry, and ABI/FBI fingerprint check) and drug screen.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews menus to determine type and quantities of meats and vegetables to be prepared.
  • Prepares washing, trimming, cooking, and seasoning of food items for each meal.
  • Measures and mixes ingredients according to recipes using a variety of kitchen utensils and equipment.
  • Bakes, roasts, broils, and steams meats, fish and other foods.
  • Tests food being cooked by tasting, smelling, and/or piercing to determine that it is cooked.
  • Adjusts heat controls and timers on ovens, grills, etc., as required.
  • Procures foodstuffs from refrigerator, freezer or other storage area.
  • Carves portions of meats, fish and fowl for individual serving units. Apportions servings according to menu combinations or orders for patients.
  • Provides assistance on the serving line such as tray set-up, salad preparation, etc.
  • Carefully follows directions and serves only food specified on modified diets.
  • Assists in the preparation, setup, and lean up of food for special functions as defined by Food Service Director and/or Food Service Supervisor.
  • Maintains cooking area in a clean, neat, and orderly manner.
  • Successful completion of all applicable demonstrational competencies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned/required by this position.
